How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 125 mg capsule every six hours.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with water by mouth. Do not crush or chew.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 2 grams (2000 mg).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, and inflammation of the mouth lining
  • Kidney problems, usually found with blood tests
  • Redness of the upper body and face, inflammation of veins
RARE
  • Temporary or permanent hearing loss
  • Changes in blood cell counts (decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets; increase in some white blood cells)
  • Loss of balance, ringing in the ears, dizziness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Nausea
  • Kidney inflammation and kidney failure
  • Chest and back muscle pain
  • Fever and chills
  • Sudden, severe allergic skin reaction with peeling, blistering, or flaking skin, often with high fever and joint pain
  • Gut inflammation causing stomach pain and possibly bloody diarrhea
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Confusion, drowsiness, lack of energy
  • Swelling, fluid retention in the body, decreased urine output
  • Rash with swelling and pain behind the ears, neck, groin, jaw, or armpits (swollen lymph nodes), and abnormal blood or liver function tests
  • Rash with skin blistering and fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to vancomycin or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, especially if you also take other medicines that can affect your kidneys.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have an inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Inform your doctor if you have hearing problems; you may need hearing tests during treatment.
  • If you take this medicine for a long time, you might get a different type of infection.

  • Stop taking this medicine and get immediate medical help if you develop severe skin reactions like widespread red patches, blisters, or skin peeling, often with fever or flu-like symptoms.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you develop wheezing, difficulty breathing, redness of the upper body, rash, or itching, as these can be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
  • This medicine can rarely cause dizziness. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Applies to orally administered preparations. There is absorption in intestinal inflammation, which predisposes to systemic adverse effects. This must be considered especially in renal impairment. (updated 10.6.2024)
