How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your age, weight, and infection, typically 15-20 mg per kg of body weight for adults and 10-15 mg per kg for children.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein, over at least 60 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults should not be more than 2 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, noisy breathing (due to blocked airways)
  • Rash and inflammation of mouth lining, itching, itchy rash, hives
  • Kidney problems (seen in blood tests)
  • Redness of upper body and face, vein inflammation
RARE
  • Temporary or permanent hearing loss
  • Decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets
  • Increase in some white blood cells
  • Loss of balance, ringing in the ears, dizziness
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Nausea
  • Kidney inflammation and kidney failure
  • Chest and back muscle pain
  • Fever, chills
  • Severe allergic skin reaction with peeling skin, blisters, or skin shedding, possibly with high fever and joint pain
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Bowel inflammation causing stomach pain and diarrhea, which may contain blood
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Confusion, drowsiness, weakness, swelling, fluid retention, decreased urination
  • Rash with swelling or pain behind ears, in neck, groin, under jaw and armpits (swollen lymph nodes), abnormal blood and liver test results
  • Rash with blisters and fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Vancomycin Orion if you are allergic to vancomycin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to teicoplanin before, as you might also be allergic to vancomycin.
  • Inform your doctor if you have hearing problems, especially if you are elderly. You might need hearing tests during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. You will need blood and kidney tests during treatment.
  • Seek immediate medical help and stop using this medicine if you experience severe skin reactions like red, target-shaped spots, blisters, skin peeling, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, or eyes. These can be serious.

  • Contact your doctor right away if you have severe or long-lasting diarrhea during or after treatment, as this could be a sign of a serious bowel infection.
  • If you suddenly have trouble breathing, wheezing, flushing of your upper body, or a rash and itching, tell your doctor immediately as these could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
