How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 15-20 mg per kilogram of your body weight.

Method

A healthcare professional will give this medicine directly into your vein (intravenous infusion) in a hospital. It will be given slowly over at least 60 minutes.

Important

The maximum amount you can receive in one day is 2 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, noisy breathing
  • Skin rash, mouth soreness, itching, itchy bumps on the skin (hives)
  • Kidney problems, usually found with blood tests
  • Redness of the upper body and face ("red man syndrome"), inflammation of a vein
RARE
  • Temporary or lasting hearing loss
  • Decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets (blood clotting cells)
  • Increase in certain types of white blood cells
  • Problems with balance, ringing in the ears, feeling dizzy
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Kidney inflammation and kidneys not working well
  • Pain in chest and back muscles
  • Fever, feeling cold and shivering
  • Sudden, severe allergic skin reaction with skin peeling, blisters, or shedding, possibly with high fever and joint pain.
  • Heart stops beating
  • Bowel inflammation causing stomach pain and possibly bloody diarrhea
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Feeling confused, sleepy, weak; swelling, holding too much fluid, less urine
  • Rash with swelling or pain behind the ears, in the neck, groin, under the jaw, and armpits (swollen glands), abnormal blood and liver test results.
  • Rash with blisters and fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to vancomycin or any other ingredients.
  • Serious side effects, including vision loss, have happened when vancomycin was injected into the eyes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had an allergic reaction to teicoplanin, as you might also be allergic to vancomycin.
  • Tell your doctor if you have hearing problems, especially if you are older. You might need hearing tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Your blood and kidneys will be checked during treatment.

  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores after taking vancomycin.
  • If you take vancomycin for a long time, you may need regular blood, liver, and kidney tests.
  • If you get severe or long-lasting diarrhea during or after vancomycin use, contact your doctor right away. This could be a sign of bowel inflammation.
  • Stop using vancomycin and see a doctor immediately if you get severe skin reactions like red spots, blisters, or skin peeling.
  • Vancomycin should be used carefully in premature babies and infants because their kidneys are not fully developed. Blood tests may be needed for them.
  • Using vancomycin with anesthesia can increase the risk of skin redness and allergic reactions in children.
  • Taking vancomycin with other medicines that can harm kidneys or hearing (like certain antibiotics or pain relievers) can increase these risks. You may need regular blood and kidney tests.
  • If you are pregnant, vancomycin can harm the baby's ears and kidneys. Your doctor will decide if it's clearly necessary for you.
  • Vancomycin passes into breast milk. Use during breastfeeding only if other antibiotics haven't worked and after talking with your doctor about stopping breastfeeding.
