How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine your dose based on your age, weight, the infection, kidney function, and other medications.

Method

This medicine is given as a slow drip into a vein (intravenously) by a healthcare professional, taking at least 60 minutes.

Important

For adults and adolescents, the maximum daily dose is usually 2 grams (2000 mg).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, noisy breathing
  • Rash, itching, hives, and mouth inflammation
  • Kidney issues shown in blood tests
  • Redness of the upper body and face, vein inflammation
RARE
  • Temporary or permanent hearing loss
  • Decrease in white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets (cells for blood clotting)
  • Increase in some white blood cells
  • Balance problems, ringing in ears, dizziness
  • Swelling of blood vessels
  • Nausea
  • Kidney inflammation and failure
  • Chest and back muscle pain
  • Fever, chills
  • Very severe allergic skin reaction (skin peeling, blisters, high fever, joint pain)
  • Heart stopping
  • Bowel inflammation with stomach pain, possibly bloody diarrhea
  • Vomiting, diarrhea
  • Confusion, drowsiness, weakness, swelling, fluid retention, less urine
  • Rash with swelling or pain in lymph nodes (behind ears, neck, groin, under chin, armpits), abnormal blood and liver tests
  • Rash with blisters and fever

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to vancomycin or any of its ingredients.
  • If you have previously had an allergic reaction to teicoplanin, you might also be allergic to vancomycin.
  • Tell your doctor if you have hearing problems, especially if you are older, as you may need hearing tests.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor will check your blood and kidney function during treatment.
  • If you have ever had a severe rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores after taking vancomycin, tell your doctor.

  • If you take vancomycin for a long time, you might need regular blood, liver, and kidney tests.
  • If you get severe or long-lasting diarrhea during or after treatment, contact a doctor right away. This could be a sign of a serious bowel infection.
  • Stop using vancomycin and get medical help right away if you suddenly have trouble breathing, wheezing, redness on your upper body, a rash, or itching.
  • Stop using vancomycin and get medical help right away if you notice widespread red spots, blisters, skin peeling, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes, possibly with fever (signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis). Also seek help if you have a widespread rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome), or a red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin and blisters with fever (AGEP).
  • Serious problems, including vision loss, have been reported after vancomycin injections into the eye.
