How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 80 mg once a day, but your doctor may adjust it. After a heart attack or for heart failure, the dose may start at 20 mg twice a day and be gradually increased. For children, the dose depends on weight.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take your medicine at about the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 320 mg. For heart failure or after a heart attack, the dose can be up to 160 mg twice a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness and fainting when standing up
  • Worsening kidney function
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema)
  • Sudden unconsciousness (fainting)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Severe worsening of kidney function, possibly acute kidney failure
  • Muscle cramps or abnormal heart rhythm due to high blood potassium
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, or swollen feet or legs (signs of heart failure)
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in the intestines (intestinal angioedema) with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Skin blistering or blistering rash
  • Allergic reactions with rash, itching, hives, fever, joint pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms
  • Purplish-red spots on the skin, fever, or itching (signs of vasculitis)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count)
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth sores due to infections (low white blood cell count)
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia)
  • Changes in liver tests (may indicate liver damage) or yellowing of skin or eyes
  • Low blood sodium (may cause fatigue, confusion, muscle twitching, and/or seizures)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to valsartan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant or planning a pregnancy. It can harm your baby.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • If you have ever had swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat (angioedema) with other medicines, stop Valsartan Sandoz immediately and contact a doctor.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines that can increase potassium levels in your blood, such as potassium supplements or certain diuretics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have been very dehydrated (e.g., from severe diarrhea or vomiting) or are taking high doses of diuretics.
  • Be careful when driving or using machines, as this medicine may cause dizziness and affect your concentration.
