How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. For most adults, the usual starting dose is 80 mg once a day. For children aged 6 to under 18 with high blood pressure, the starting dose is usually 40 mg or 80 mg once a day, depending on their weight.

Method

Take the tablet with a glass of water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

Do not take more than 320 mg in one day unless your doctor tells you to.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure (may cause dizziness or fainting when standing up)
  • Reduced kidney function
RARE
  • Sudden fainting
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Severe worsening of kidney function (acute kidney failure)
  • Muscle cramps, abnormal heart rhythm (due to high potassium)
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, swollen feet or legs (signs of heart failure)
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Increase in creatinine in blood (may indicate kidney problems)
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives and itching (signs of a severe allergic reaction called angioedema)
  • Swelling in the gut (intestinal angioedema), causing stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Blisters on the skin
  • Allergic reactions with rash, itching, hives, fever, swollen joints and joint pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms
  • Purple spots on the skin, fever, itching (vasculitis)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising (due to low platelets)
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth sores (due to low white blood cells)
  • Low hemoglobin and red blood cell count (anemia)
  • High potassium in blood (can cause muscle cramps and abnormal heart rhythm)
  • High liver function values (may indicate liver damage), including yellowing of skin/eyes (jaundice)
  • High urea nitrogen in blood (may indicate kidney problems)
  • Low sodium in blood (can cause tiredness, confusion, muscle twitching, and/or seizures)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to valsartan, soya oil, peanut oil, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you are more than 3 months pregnant; also avoid in early pregnancy.
  • Do not take if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking another blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
