How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your exact dose. For high blood pressure, adults usually start with 80 mg once daily. For children, the dose depends on their weight. For heart attack or heart failure, the dose usually starts lower and is increased over time.

Method

Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food. Try to take your medicine at about the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is generally 320 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Low blood pressure, which may cause lightheadedness or fainting when you stand up
  • Worsening kidney function
RARE
  • Sudden fainting
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Severe worsening of kidney function (acute kidney failure)
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular heartbeat (due to high potassium levels in blood)
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, swollen feet or legs (signs of heart failure)
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in the intestines with symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Blisters on the skin
  • Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or hives, fever, joint pain
  • Red-purple spots on the skin (vasculitis, which is inflammation of blood vessels)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count)
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth sores from infections (due to low white blood cell count)
  • Low hemoglobin and red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Increased liver test results, or yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Low blood sodium levels (which can cause fatigue, confusion, or muscle twitching)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to valsartan or any other ingredient.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are more than 3 months pregnant, or if you are planning to become pregnant, as it can harm your baby.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • If you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or trouble swallowing, stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately as this could be a serious allergic reaction.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine that contains aliskiren.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
