How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 80 mg once daily. Your doctor might increase it to 160 mg or 320 mg. For children aged 6-18, the dose depends on weight, usually starting from 40 mg or 80 mg once daily, and can go up to 320 mg.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water at about the same time each day. You can take it with or without food. The tablet can be broken in half if needed.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 320 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, feeling light-headed
  • Low blood pressure (which can make you feel dizzy)
  • Worsened kidney function
RARE
  • Allergic reactions like rash, itching, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing/swallowing
  • Sudden fainting
  • Feeling like your surroundings are spinning (vertigo)
  • Severe acute kidney problems
  • Muscle cramps or abnormal heart rhythm (due to high potassium levels in your blood)
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, or swollen feet/legs (these can be signs of heart failure)
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling very tired (fatigue)
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in the intestines (with stomach pain, feeling sick, vomiting, and diarrhea)
  • Skin blistering
  • Rash and itching with fever, joint pain, muscle pain, swollen glands, or flu-like symptoms
  • Purplish-red spots on the skin with fever and itching
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth sores (due to a low white blood cell count)
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (can mean liver damage or yellow skin/eyes)
  • Low sodium in your blood (can cause tiredness, confusion, muscle twitches, or seizures in severe cases)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to valsartan or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.
  • Do not take if you are more than 3 months pregnant (it's also best to avoid Valsarstad in early pregnancy).
  • If you get swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat (a serious allergic reaction called angioedema), stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
