How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical starting dose is 80 mg once daily, but your doctor may adjust it based on your condition and age. For children (6-18 years), the starting dose is usually 40 mg or 80 mg once daily depending on weight.

Method

Swallow the tablet with a glass of water, with or without food, around the same time each day. The tablet can be divided into two equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 320 mg, but your doctor will decide the appropriate maximum for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (feeling light-headed)
  • Low blood pressure (can cause dizziness)
  • Reduced kidney function
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness)
  • Sudden unconsciousness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Muscle cramps
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty breathing when lying down
  • Swollen feet or legs
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in the intestines (with stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)
  • Skin blistering
  • Rash with fever/joint pain/muscle pain/swollen glands (serum sickness)
  • Purplish-red spots on skin/fever/itching (vasculitis)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising (low platelets)
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever/sore throat/mouth ulcers (low white blood cells)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • High potassium levels (muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat)
  • High liver enzymes (liver damage)
  • Yellow skin/eyes (jaundice)
  • High urea/creatinine (kidney problems)
  • Low sodium levels (fatigue, confusion, muscle twitching, seizures)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to valsartan or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are more than 3 months pregnant (it's also best to avoid in early pregnancy).
  • If you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or have difficulty breathing, stop taking Valsarstad and seek medical help right away. Do not take Valsarstad or other medicines containing valsartan again.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, a recent kidney transplant, or narrowing of your kidney arteries.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a severe heart condition (other than heart failure or a recent heart attack).
  • Tell your doctor if you are dehydrated from vomiting, diarrhea, or taking high doses of diuretics (water pills).
  • Avoid taking this medicine with certain other blood pressure medications like ACE inhibitors or aliskiren, as this combination is not recommended.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
