How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. For high blood pressure in children (6-18 years) weighing less than 35 kg, it's usually 40 mg once daily. For those weighing 35 kg or more, the starting dose is usually 80 mg once daily. For adults after a heart attack, the starting dose is usually 20 mg twice a day (half of a 40 mg tablet). For adults with heart failure, the starting dose is usually 40 mg twice a day.

Method

Take with or without food. You can split the tablet into two equal doses. Swallow with a glass of water, around the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is generally 320 mg, taken as 160 mg twice a day, or up to 320 mg once daily for high blood pressure in children/adolescents.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, feeling light-headed
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy
  • Worsening kidney function
RARE
  • Allergic reaction (rash, itching, dizziness, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing)
  • Sudden fainting or a spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Severe worsening of kidney function (acute kidney failure)
  • Muscle cramps or abnormal heart rhythm (due to too much potassium in the blood)
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing when lying down, or swollen feet and legs (signs of heart failure)
  • Headache or cough
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Swelling of the intestines with stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
  • Blisters on the skin or a rash with fever, joint pain, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, or flu-like symptoms
  • Purplish-red spots on the skin, fever, or itching (signs of blood vessel inflammation)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count)
  • Fever, sore throat, or mouth ulcers (due to low white blood cell count)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia), causing tiredness and paleness
  • High potassium levels in blood (muscle cramps, abnormal heart rhythm)
  • Liver problems, including yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • High urea nitrogen and creatinine levels (kidney problems)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (can cause tiredness, confusion, muscle twitching, or seizures)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to valsartan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant. Avoid use during early pregnancy as well.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives, or itching, as these could be signs of a serious allergic reaction (angioedema).

  • Be careful when driving or using machines, as this medicine can cause dizziness and affect concentration.
