How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is two tablets once a day, but your doctor will tell you the exact dose for your condition.

Method

Take tablets whole with food if possible; do not crush or break them.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes; this can be up to four tablets per day during initial treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low white blood cells, with symptoms like sore throat, mouth sores, or fever.
  • Low red blood cells, with symptoms like shortness of breath, tiredness, fast heartbeat, or pale skin.
  • Fungal infection and thrush (in mouth).
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (e.g., sinusitis, tonsillitis).
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Headache.
  • Cough.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Rash (eczema).
  • Feeling tired.
  • Fever.
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis), with symptoms like fever, chills, fast heartbeat, confusion, and slurred speech.
  • Low platelets, causing easier bleeding or bruising, blood in urine or stool, or bleeding gums; bleeding can be severe.
  • Severely low blood cell count.
  • Pancreatitis, with severe stomach pain that spreads to the back.
  • Seizures.
  • Flu.
  • Urinary tract infection, with symptoms like fever, frequent or painful urination.
  • Skin or tissue infection.
  • Mild allergic reaction (red, itchy skin).
  • Weight loss.
  • Feeling depressed, anxious, or confused.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • Weakness or numbness in hands or feet, possibly affecting balance.
  • Changes in sensation, tingling, prickling, or burning feeling.
  • Changes in taste.
  • Chills.
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis), eye pain, or vision problems.
  • Earache.
  • Low blood pressure, causing dizziness or fainting.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Constipation, gas, indigestion, stomach ache, swollen abdomen.
  • Mouth sores.
  • Liver and kidney problems (detected by blood tests).
  • Night sweats.
  • Itching, rash.
  • Hair loss.
  • Back, muscle, or joint pain, muscle cramps.
  • Feeling dizzy, weak, or generally unwell.
RARE
  • Bone marrow failing to produce blood cells.
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real).
  • Abnormal thoughts or feelings, losing touch with reality.
  • Kidney dysfunction.
  • Feeling agitated.
  • Tremors, shaking.
  • Deafness.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Hives, dry skin.
  • Blood in urine.
  • Male infertility.
  • Chest pain.
  • Itchy raised rash (hives).
  • Sudden swelling of the throat, face, lips, or mouth, which can make swallowing or breathing difficult.
  • Sudden swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to valganciclovir, ganciclovir, or any other ingredients.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • Your doctor will check your blood cell counts regularly, especially if they are low.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • This medicine can harm an unborn baby. Women must use effective contraception during treatment and for 7 months after. Men must use condoms during treatment and for 4 months after if their partner could become pregnant.
