How to Use

Dosage

The amount you take depends on your illness. For preventing CMV infection, it's usually two tablets once a day. For treating an active CMV eye infection, it's two tablets twice a day for 21 days, followed by two tablets once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Take them with food if possible. Do not break or crush the tablets.

Important

Never take more tablets than your doctor has prescribed. It's very important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully to avoid taking too much.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low white blood cell count (may cause infection symptoms like sore throat, mouth sores, or fever)
  • Low red blood cell count (may cause tiredness, shortness of breath, fast heartbeat, or pale skin)
  • Low platelet count (may cause easy bleeding, bruising, blood in urine or stool, or bleeding gums)
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis) with symptoms like fever, chills, fast heartbeat, confusion, or slurred speech
  • Mild allergic reaction (e.g., red, itchy skin)
  • Infections (e.g., yeast infection, cold, sinus infection, sore throat, bladder infection, skin infection)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach problems like diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, constipation, gas, bloating, mouth sores, or trouble swallowing
  • Skin rash, itching, night sweats, hair loss
  • Feeling tired, fever, chills, or a general feeling of being unwell
  • Weight loss
  • Mood changes like feeling down, anxious, confused, or having trouble sleeping
  • Numbness, tingling, weakness in hands or feet, changes in taste, muscle or joint pain, muscle cramps, back pain
  • Eye problems (e.g., pink eye, eye pain, vision changes), ear pain, or hearing problems
  • Low blood pressure (may cause dizziness or weakness)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (with severe stomach pain that goes to your back)
  • Seizures
  • Abnormal results from liver or kidney blood tests
RARE
  • Bone marrow failure (body stops making blood cells)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Unusual thoughts or feelings, losing touch with reality
  • Serious kidney problems
  • Agitation
  • Tremors, shaking
  • Deafness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hives, dry skin
  • Blood in urine
  • Infertility in men
  • Chest pain
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., sudden swelling of the throat, face, lips, mouth, hands, feet or ankles, which can make it hard to swallow or breathe)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to valganciclovir, ganciclovir, or any similar medicines.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless your doctor says it's okay. Use effective birth control during and for at least 30 days after treatment. Men whose partners could become pregnant must use condoms during and for at least 90 days after treatment.
  • You will need regular blood tests before and during treatment, as this medicine can affect your blood cells.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor might adjust your dose. Tell your doctor about any kidney issues.
  • Tell your doctor if you are receiving radiation therapy or dialysis.
