How to Use

Dosage

For preventing CMV after organ transplant: two tablets once daily for up to 100 days (up to 200 days for kidney transplant patients). For initial treatment of CMV retinitis in AIDS patients: two tablets twice daily for 21 days. For long-term prevention of CMV retinitis recurrence in AIDS patients: two tablets once daily.

Method

Handle tablets carefully. Do not split or crush them. Swallow tablets whole, preferably with food.

Important

Do not take more tablets than your doctor has prescribed to avoid overdose. For initial CMV retinitis treatment, do not exceed 21 days unless instructed by your doctor, as this may increase side effects.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low white blood cells, with infection symptoms like sore throat, mouth sores, or fever
  • Low red blood cells, with symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, or pale skin
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis), with symptoms like fever, chills, palpitations, confusion, or slurred speech
  • Low platelets, with symptoms like easy bleeding or bruising, blood in urine or stool, or bleeding gums
  • Severe low blood cell counts
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), with severe stomach pain that radiates to the back
  • Seizures
  • Yeast infection and oral thrush
  • Upper respiratory tract infection (e.g., sinusitis, tonsillitis)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rash (eczema)
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Flu
  • Urinary tract infection, with symptoms like fever, frequent or painful urination
  • Skin or subcutaneous tissue infection

  • Feeling of weakness or numbness in hands or feet, which may affect balance
  • Altered sensations, such as tingling, itching, prickling, or burning

  • Low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness or weakness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Constipation, flatulence, indigestion, stomach pain, or abdominal swelling

  • Liver and kidney problems, found in lab tests
  • Night sweats

  • Back, muscle, or joint pain, muscle cramps
  • Dizziness, weakness, or a general feeling of being unwell
RARE
  • Bone marrow failure (inability to produce blood cells)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Abnormal thoughts or feelings, loss of touch with reality
  • Kidney dysfunction
  • Feeling agitated
  • Tremor, shaking
  • Deafness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Hives, dry skin
  • Blood in urine
  • Male infertility
  • Chest pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to valganciclovir, ganciclovir, or any other ingredients in this medicine, or if you are breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to other antiviral drugs used for viral infections, such as acyclovir, penciclovir, valaciclovir, or famciclovir.
  • Your blood counts (white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets) may decrease. Your doctor will perform blood tests before and during treatment.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, are receiving radiation therapy, or hemodialysis, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Do not take more tablets than your doctor has prescribed to avoid overdose, especially if you are switching from ganciclovir capsules to Valganciclovir Accord.

  • This medicine can harm an unborn baby. Do not take if you are pregnant unless your doctor specifically recommends it. Women who can become pregnant must use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 30 days after. Men whose partners can become pregnant must use condoms during treatment and for at least 90 days after.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you experience dizziness, tiredness, shaking, or confusion while taking this medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to.
  • If you experience signs of a sudden and severe allergic reaction (such as raised, itchy rash, sudden swelling of the neck, face, lips, or mouth that makes it hard to swallow or breathe, or sudden swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles), stop taking the medicine immediately and seek emergency medical help.
