V-Pen

V-Pen is an antibiotic from the penicillin group used to treat various bacterial infections, especially in young children for throat, sinus, middle ear, bronchial, or mouth infections.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the dose for you or your child.

Method

Shake the bottle well before each dose. Take V-Pen on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours after the previous meal and at least 30 minutes before the next meal. Use the dosing syringe provided to measure the dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, diarrhea, or loose stools
  • Rash
RARE
  • Increase in a certain type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Sudden swelling of the skin or mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • Swelling of the lungs
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Rash resembling scarlet fever or measles
  • Red spots on the skin (purpura)
  • Allergic inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis)
  • Fever
  • Increased breakdown of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia)
  • Reversible decrease in certain white blood cells (neutropenia)
  • Serum sickness (allergic reaction with swelling and joint pain)
  • Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction with rapidly developing general symptoms)
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (fever and general symptoms at the start of antibiotic treatment)
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis)
  • Black, hairy tongue
  • Tooth discoloration (usually reversible with brushing, reported in children)
  • Liver damage, liver inflammation (hepatitis), cholestatic jaundice, elevated liver enzymes
  • Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Seizures, nerve damage, and kidney damage (mainly in patients with existing kidney failure, high doses, or injected medicine)
  • Low platelet count (rare, with high doses or injected medicine)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to penicillin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to other similar antibiotics.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have previously had a rash or other allergic symptoms when using antibiotics, or if you have atopy.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea can prevent the medicine from being properly absorbed. Tell your doctor if you experience these symptoms.
  • Finish the entire course of medicine, even if you start feeling better. Stopping the medicine too early can cause the infection to return.

  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine. If your breastfed baby develops a rash, stop breastfeeding and contact your doctor.
