How to Use

Dosage

For adults with liver disease, take 10-15 mg per kg body weight daily, divided into two doses. For dissolving gallstones, take 8-10 mg per kg body weight daily, divided into two doses (one dose late in the evening). For children (6-18 years) with cystic fibrosis, take 20 mg per kg body weight daily, divided into 2-3 doses.

Method

Swallow the hard capsules whole with liquid.

Important

For adults, maximum 15 mg/kg daily for liver disease, 10 mg/kg daily for gallstones. For children (6-18 years) with cystic fibrosis, maximum 30 mg/kg daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Pale stools
  • Increased liver enzyme values
RARE
  • Severe pain in the upper right abdomen during treatment for liver diseases (primary biliary cirrhosis).
  • Worsening of liver function during treatment for liver diseases (primary biliary cirrhosis), which usually returns to normal after stopping treatment.
  • Calcification of gallstones.
  • Hives (itchy rash).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ursodeoxycholic acid or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have narrow or blocked bile ducts outside the liver.
  • Do not use if you have kidney failure.
  • Do not use if you have advanced liver cirrhosis.
  • Do not use if you have an active stomach or duodenal ulcer.

  • Do not use if you have recurring gallstone disease.
  • Do not use if you have acute gallbladder or bile duct inflammation.
  • Do not use for children (6-18 years) with cystic fibrosis who have severely reduced bile flow.
  • Your liver function will be checked with blood tests during treatment.
  • If gallstones become smaller during treatment, they might move and cause blockages or inflammation in the bile ducts; seek medical attention if this happens.
  • Women taking this medicine for gallstone dissolution should use non-hormonal contraception, as hormonal contraceptives can increase gallstone formation.
  • If you get diarrhea, contact your doctor as your dose may need to be changed.
