How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose individually based on your needs. It is often given as an injection or continuous drip into a vein.

Method

Ultiva is given as a single injection or a continuous infusion into a vein, slowly over a longer period. The way it's given and the dose depend on the procedure or intensive care and the severity of pain, with individual doses.

Important

The doctor continuously adjusts the dose to avoid excessive effects, and it's generally not used for more than three days in intensive care.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Shallow breathing
  • Temporary stop in breathing
  • Itching
  • Cough
  • Shivering or chills (after surgery)
  • High blood pressure (after surgery)
RARE
  • Lack of oxygen in blood (hypoxia)
  • Constipation
  • Severe slow heartbeat followed by cardiac arrest (when used with other anesthetics)
  • Drug dependence or tolerance (needing more of the medicine over time)
  • Seizures
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia or atrioventricular block)
  • Withdrawal syndrome (symptoms may include increased heart rate, high blood pressure, restlessness, agitation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, chills, tremors, and sweating)
  • Allergic reactions such as hives, swelling of the face and mouth that can cause breathing difficulties, collapse, severe drop in blood pressure, or rapid heartbeat
  • Pain (after surgery)
  • Feeling of calmness or drowsiness (after surgery)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Ultiva if you are allergic to remifentanil, fentanyl-like medicines, other opioids (like morphine or codeine), or any other ingredient in Ultiva.
  • Ultiva should not be injected into your spinal canal (epidural or intrathecal) or used as the only medicine to start anesthesia.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lung, heart, or blood pressure problems, if you are over 65 or frail, as these conditions can make you more sensitive to Ultiva's effects.
  • Repeated use of Ultiva can lead to dependence and abuse. Discuss any concerns about addiction with your doctor.
  • Using Ultiva with sedatives, certain antidepressants, or other pain medications (like gabapentinoids) can cause very serious breathing problems, deep sleep, or coma. Make sure your doctor knows about all other medicines you are taking.

  • Do not drink alcohol after receiving Ultiva until you are fully recovered.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to be pregnant, or breastfeeding, tell your doctor. Ultiva may affect your baby if used during childbirth.
