How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on the type of procedure you are having and your level of pain.

Method

A trained healthcare professional will always give you this medicine into a vein, either as a single injection or a slow infusion over time.

Important

Your doctor will adjust your maximum daily dose as needed; for intensive care, it's generally not recommended for more than three days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Low blood pressure
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Shallow breathing
  • Temporary pause in breathing
  • Itching
  • Cough
  • Chills
  • High blood pressure
RARE
  • Raised itchy rash (hives)
  • Swelling of the face and mouth (angioedema), causing breathing difficulties
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Lack of oxygen (hypoxia)
  • Constipation
  • Slow heartbeat followed by cardiac arrest in patients receiving Ultiva with one or more anesthetic agents
  • Physical need for Ultiva (drug dependence) or need to increase the dose over time to achieve the same effect (drug tolerance)
  • (Epileptic) seizure
  • A certain type of irregular heart rhythm (atrioventricular block)
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • Withdrawal syndrome (can include increased heart rate, high blood pressure, restlessness or agitation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, chills, tremor, and sweating)
  • Pain
  • Feeling calm or drowsy

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Ultiva if you are allergic to remifentanil or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Ultiva if you are allergic to fentanyl-like pain medicines (opioids).
  • This medicine must not be injected into your spinal canal.
  • Ultiva must not be used as the only medicine to start anesthesia.
  • Be especially careful if you are allergic to other opioid medicines, such as morphine or codeine.

  • Tell your doctor if you have reduced lung function, as you might be more sensitive to breathing difficulties.
  • Inform your doctor if you are over 65, frail, have low blood pressure, or reduced blood volume, as you might be more sensitive to heart problems.
  • Ultiva can cause dependence and misuse, and long-term use may reduce its effectiveness.
  • Do not stop Ultiva suddenly, especially if you have used it for more than three days, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like restlessness or high blood pressure.
  • Using Ultiva with sedative medicines can cause severe drowsiness, breathing problems, or even coma, which can be life-threatening.
  • Do not drink alcohol until you have fully recovered after Ultiva treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, and avoid breastfeeding for 24 hours after Ultiva treatment.
  • Ultiva can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery.
