Truxal is an antipsychotic medicine used to treat various mental health conditions and psychological symptoms like restlessness, anxiety, and sleeplessness, and it can also enhance the effect of pain relievers.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. The dose varies for each person and depends on the illness.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not chew them.

Important

Always follow your doctor's instructions for the maximum daily dose. Do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, especially at the start of treatment. In elderly patients, high doses may cause low blood pressure and fainting when standing up.
  • Dry mouth, increased saliva, fast heartbeat (tachycardia).
  • Palpitations (feeling your heart beat fast or irregularly).
  • Involuntary, prolonged muscle contractions (dystonia), headache.
  • Difficulty focusing vision (accommodation disorder), visual disturbances.
  • Constipation, indigestion or upper stomach problems (dyspepsia), nausea.
  • Increased sweating (hyperhidrosis).
  • Muscle pain (myalgia).
  • Fatigue, weakness (asthenia).
  • Insomnia, nervousness, agitation, decreased sex drive (reduced libido).
  • Increased appetite and weight gain.
  • Movement disorders (extrapyramidal symptoms).
RARE
  • Involuntary, repetitive movements of the mouth and tongue, which can be early signs of tardive dyskinesia.
  • High fever, unusual muscle stiffness, and confusion, especially if accompanied by sweating and a fast heartbeat; these could be signs of a rare condition called neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), which can be a sign of liver problems.
  • Parkinsonism, convulsions, inability to sit still or move (akathisia).
  • Eye rolling (oculogyric crisis).
  • Vomiting, diarrhea.
  • Urination problems or inability to urinate (urinary retention).
  • Rash, itching (pruritus), skin reaction due to light sensitivity, eczema or skin inflammation (dermatitis).
  • Muscle stiffness.
  • Poor appetite, weight loss.
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension), hot flashes.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
  • Sexual disorders (delayed ejaculation, erectile dysfunction).
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), low neutrophil count (neutropenia), low white blood cell count (leukopenia), lack of granulocytes (agranulocytosis).
  • Shortness of breath or pain when breathing (dyspnea).
  • High prolactin level in the blood (hyperprolactinemia).
  • High blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia), impaired glucose tolerance.
  • Hypersensitivity, acute whole-body allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia), excessive milk production (galactorrhea), absence of menstruation (amenorrhea).
  • Prolonged QT interval (slow heart rate and ECG changes).
  • Heart rhythm disorders (ventricular arrhythmias, ventricular fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia).
  • Torsade de pointes (a specific type of heart rhythm disorder).
  • Prolonged, painful erection. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience this.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to chlorprothixene or any other ingredient in Truxal.
  • Do not use if your level of consciousness is reduced.
  • Do not use if you have or have had heart or blood vessel disease, or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Do not use if you have low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood, or a family history of these conditions.
  • Do not use if you have a certain adrenal gland disorder called pheochromocytoma.

  • Do not use if you have abnormal blood cell counts.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy, especially at the start of treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment, as it can increase drowsiness.
  • If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or are breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you notice symptoms of blood clots, such as swelling, pain, and redness in your legs, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.
  • Elderly patients with dementia treated with antipsychotics have a slightly higher risk of death.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
