How to Use

Dosage

Take the dose your doctor prescribes for you.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment. Take it regularly at the same time each day. Some tablets have a score line to help you divide them if you have trouble swallowing them whole.

Possible Side Effects

  • Changes in blood cell counts (like white blood cells)
  • Hives (itchy red welts on the skin)
  • Allergic and strong sensitivity reactions
  • High potassium levels in the blood
  • Inflammation of the eye
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin becomes very sensitive to sunlight
  • Severe skin rash (erythema multiforme)
  • Liver damage
  • High liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Inflammation of the membranes around the brain (meningitis)
  • Blockage of bile flow (cholestasis)
  • Fever caused by the medicine

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Trimopan if you are allergic to trimethoprim or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Trimopan if you have a severe blood disorder, a lack of folic acid (which can cause anemia), bone marrow problems, or severe liver problems.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Trimopan if you have kidney problems or a rare illness called porphyria.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you get severe diarrhea during treatment.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you get a sore throat, fever, look pale, or have small bleeds under the skin, as these could be signs of serious blood problems.

  • Trimopan is not recommended for children younger than 3 months.
  • Do not use Trimopan if you are pregnant, especially during the first 20 weeks, as it may cause miscarriage.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Contraindicated in case of severe hepatic impairment. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Consider the risks when used in combination with medicines that predispose to hyperkalaemia and are myelotoxic. (updated 6.11.2023)
