How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose to take.

Method

Take the tablet at the same time each day with plenty of fluids. Some tablets can be divided if you have trouble swallowing.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, tongue inflammation, rash, itching.
RARE
  • Changes in blood cell counts (white blood cells, hemoglobin), hives, allergic reactions, increased potassium in blood.
  • Diarrhea, liver problems (e.g., cell death, increased enzymes), bile duct blockage.
  • Eye inflammation, skin sensitivity to sunlight, severe skin rashes (like erythema multiforme), meningitis, drug fever.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to trimethoprim or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a folate deficiency (which can cause anemia), a severe blood disease, bone marrow problems, or severe liver problems.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking if you have kidney problems or porphyria (a rare metabolic disorder).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop severe diarrhea, sore throat, fever, pale skin, or small skin bleeds, as these could be signs of serious blood problems.
  • Avoid during pregnancy, especially during the first 20 weeks, as it may increase the risk of miscarriage. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor for advice.

  • Not recommended for children under 3 months of age.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Your blood counts and potassium levels may need to be checked regularly, especially if you take this medicine for a long time or in high doses, or if you are elderly.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Contraindicated in case of severe hepatic impairment. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Consider the risks when used in combination with medicines that predispose to hyperkalaemia and are myelotoxic. (updated 6.11.2023)
