How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 ml twice a day (total 10 ml daily), and your doctor may adjust it. For children, the dose depends on their weight.

Method

Take the medicine by mouth twice a day, always at about the same time. Use the dosing syringe and shake the bottle well for at least 10 seconds before measuring your dose.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is usually 40 ml (2400 mg oxcarbazepine). For children, the maximum daily dose is 46 mg per kilogram of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, double vision.
  • Weakness, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, apathy (lack of interest), agitation, confusion, blurred vision, other vision problems, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, acne, hair loss, balance problems, speech problems, weight gain.
  • Tremors, coordination problems, involuntary eye movements, anxiety, nervousness, depression, mood changes, rash.
RARE
  • Weight gain, tiredness, hair loss, muscle weakness, feeling cold (signs of an underactive thyroid).
  • Falls.
  • High blood pressure, hives.
  • Weakening of bones (osteopenia, osteoporosis) and fractures.
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels (can be seen in blood tests).
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (symptoms include drowsiness, confusion, muscle twitching, worsening seizures).
  • Pancreatitis (severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Trileptal if you are allergic to oxcarbazepine, eslicarbazepine, or carbamazepine, which are in this medicine.
  • If you have severe kidney or liver disease, talk to your doctor before starting Trileptal.
  • Trileptal can make hormonal birth control (like birth control pills) less effective. Use additional contraception to prevent pregnancy.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of your face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash with fever.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if your skin or eyes turn yellow, which could be a sign of liver inflammation.

  • If your seizures get worse or you develop symptoms of a blood disorder, such as unusual tiredness, paleness, or bruising, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Contact your doctor if your heart rate is unusually fast or slow.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
