How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 600 mg daily, divided into two doses. Effective doses are usually between 600-2400 mg daily. For children (6 years and older), the starting dose is 8-10 mg per kg of body weight daily, divided into two doses. Effective doses are usually around 30 mg per kg of body weight daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets with a small amount of water. Tablets can be broken in half to make them easier to swallow, but not to divide into equal doses.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is usually 2400 mg. For children, the maximum daily dose is 46 mg per kg of body weight.

  • Lupus-like symptoms (red, patchy skin rash, mainly on the face, sometimes with tiredness, fever, nausea, or loss of appetite)
  • Severe stomach pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite (signs of pancreatitis)
  • Allergy symptoms like rash, fever, muscle and joint pain

Important Warnings

  • If you get a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips, eyelids, face, throat, or mouth; sudden breathing difficulties; fever with swollen lymph nodes; or rash and blistering skin.
  • If you develop symptoms of liver problems, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • If the number of your seizures increases.
  • If you develop symptoms of blood problems, such as tiredness, shortness of breath, paleness, headaches, chills, dizziness, frequent infections with fever, sore throat, mouth sores, easy bruising or bleeding, nosebleeds, red or bluish skin spots, or unexplained skin changes.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide.

  • If your heartbeat is unusually fast or slow.
  • If you experience severe drowsiness, confusion, muscle twitching, or much worse seizures (these can be signs of low sodium in the blood).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
