How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 600 mg of oxcarbazepine per day. For children, the starting dose is 8-10 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided into two doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets with a small amount of water. You can break tablets in half to make them easier to swallow.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 2400 mg, but your doctor will find the best dose for you. For children, the maximum daily dose is 46 mg per kg of body weight.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, double vision.
  • Weakness, memory problems, difficulty concentrating, apathy, agitation, confusion, blurred vision, vision disturbances, constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, acne, hair loss, balance problems, weight gain, speech problems.
  • Tremor, coordination problems, involuntary eye movements, anxiety, nervousness, depression, mood changes, rash.
RARE
  • Weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, muscle weakness, feeling cold (signs of underactive thyroid).
  • Falls.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Hives.
  • Swelling of lips, eyelids, face, throat, or mouth, with difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing (signs of a severe allergic reaction).
  • Severe skin rash with fever and organ involvement.
  • Tiredness, shortness of breath, paleness, headache, chills, dizziness, frequent infections with fever, sore throat, mouth sores, easy bruising or bleeding, nosebleeds, red or bluish spots on the skin, or unexplained skin changes (signs of blood problems).
  • Extreme drowsiness, confusion, muscle twitching, or much worse seizures (possible signs of low sodium in the blood).
  • Symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction, such as rash, fever, or muscle and joint pain.
  • Severe blistering on the skin, lips, eyes, mouth, nose, or genitals (signs of a very serious allergic reaction).
  • Red, patchy rash, mainly on the face, with tiredness, fever, nausea, or loss of appetite (signs of lupus).
  • Flu-like symptoms with yellow skin or whites of eyes (signs of liver inflammation).
  • Severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite (signs of pancreas inflammation).
  • Irregular, very fast, or very slow heart rate.
  • Bone changes, such as bone thinning and fragility, and bone fractures.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to oxcarbazepine, eslicarbazepine, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions (like a rash) to carbamazepine or other similar medicines, as you might also react to Trileptal.
  • If you have kidney disease or severe liver disease.
  • If you are taking water pills (diuretics) or have heart disease, shortness of breath, or swollen legs.
  • If blood tests show you have low sodium levels in your blood.

  • If you use hormonal birth control (like the pill), Trileptal can make it less effective. Use an extra birth control method.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you get a sudden severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of your lips, eyelids, face, throat, or mouth, or have trouble breathing or seeing.
  • If you develop signs of liver problems, like yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes (hepatitis).
  • If your seizures become more frequent.
  • If you develop symptoms of blood disorders (e.g., tiredness, paleness, frequent infections, easy bruising).
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • If your heart rate is unusually fast or slow.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
