How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 600 mg per day. For children (over 6 years old), the starting dose is generally 8–10 mg per kg of body weight per day, divided into two doses.

Method

Take the tablets with water. You can split tablets to make them easier to swallow.

Important

For adults, the best dose is usually between 600–2400 mg per day. The maximum dose for children is 46 mg per kg of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling tired, dizzy, or sleepy; headaches; nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain; vision problems (like double or blurred vision); weakness; memory problems; difficulty concentrating; mood changes (like anxiety, depression, or agitation); skin rash, acne, or hair loss; balance or speech problems; weight gain; constipation; diarrhea; shaking; coordination problems; eye twitching.
RARE
  • Weight gain, muscle weakness, feeling cold (underactive thyroid), falls, high blood pressure, hives, elevated liver enzyme levels, weakened bones and fractures, changes in heart rhythm (irregular, fast, or slow heartbeat), swelling of lips, face, throat, or mouth (severe allergic reaction, difficulty breathing or swallowing), severe skin reactions (e.g., blisters, fever), flu-like symptoms with yellowing of skin/eyes (hepatitis), severe upper abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of appetite (pancreatitis), tiredness, shortness of breath, paleness, chills, mouth sores, bruising, bleeding, nosebleeds, skin changes (blood count changes), extreme drowsiness, muscle twitching, or worsening of seizures (symptoms of low sodium).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Trileptal, its ingredients, or similar medicines like eslicarbazepine or carbamazepine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or severe liver disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart disease (e.g., shortness of breath or swollen feet) or if your blood tests show low sodium levels.
  • Trileptal can make birth control pills less effective. Use another type of birth control.
  • Get medical help right away if you develop a rash, fever, swelling of your lips, eyes, or face, or have trouble swallowing or breathing.

  • Get medical help right away if your seizures increase or get worse.
  • Get medical help right away if you develop tiredness, paleness, frequent infections, bruising, or bleeding.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor right away.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can worsen seizures. Your doctor will tell you how to stop safely.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy, dizzy, or cause vision problems. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you have these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Numerous potential adverse effects, such as hyponatraemia, hematological changes and risk of hepatic injury. May increase the need for a vitamin D supplement. (updated 10.11.2025)
