How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your specific dose.

Method

Trexan is given as an injection under the skin or into a muscle, only once a week.

Important

It is critical to take Trexan only once a week; taking too much can be deadly.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mouth inflammation
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Rash or skin redness
  • Headache
  • Tiredness or drowsiness
  • Reduced blood cell counts (white, red, and platelets)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Persistent dry cough and fever (may indicate lung inflammation)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as severe rash, swelling of the face or limbs, difficulty swallowing, or fainting.
  • Yellow skin or eyes (signs of liver damage)
  • Swelling in hands or feet, changes in how often you urinate, or reduced urine (signs of kidney damage)
  • Severe infections like shingles, or general infections with fever, chills, body aches, and sore throat.
  • Bloody vomit or black, tar-like stools (signs of severe stomach or bowel problems)
  • Blood clots, which can cause symptoms like weakness on one side of the body (stroke) or pain, swelling, and redness in a leg (deep vein thrombosis).
  • Severe headache with fever and stiff neck (may be signs of brain membrane inflammation)
  • Unexpected bleeding, such as from gums, blood in urine, bloody vomit, or easy bruising (signs of low blood platelets or bone marrow issues).
  • Severe skin rash or blistering (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can also affect mouth, eyes, and genitals).
  • Hair loss
  • Dizziness, confusion, or depression
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Visual disturbances or blurred vision
  • Swollen lymph nodes (lumps under the skin), or issues with sweat glands.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Trexan if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, as it can cause serious birth defects or miscarriage.
  • Do not use Trexan if you have severe liver, kidney, or blood diseases.
  • Do not use Trexan if you have a severe infection (like tuberculosis or HIV) or ulcers in your mouth, stomach, or intestines.
  • Avoid getting live vaccines while you are on Trexan treatment.
  • Trexan can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid strong sun and use sun protection.

  • Contact your doctor right away if you cough up or spit blood, as this can be a sign of lung bleeding.
  • If you get severe diarrhea, tell your doctor immediately, as treatment might need to be stopped.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. For the treatment of conditions other than cancer only once weekly. Organtoxic such as kidneys, liver and bone marrow. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Avoid use in severe renal impairment. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 6.11.2023)
