How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will calculate your dose based on your blood tests and body size; the dose may be reduced if you are receiving other cancer treatments.

Method

This medicine is given as a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion) by a doctor or nurse, which takes 15-30 minutes.

Important

The medicine is typically given every 3-4 weeks, and there is no specific maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decrease in white blood cells (increased infection risk), platelets (bruising and bleeding), and red blood cells (paleness, weakness, shortness of breath).
  • Stomach problems, including nausea with or without vomiting.
  • Mild hair loss; hair usually grows back after treatment.
  • Darkening of the skin.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as itching, rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or low blood pressure.
  • Breathing difficulties caused by an allergic reaction, inflammation, or lung infection.
  • Fungal, viral, or bacterial infections, which may cause fever, sweating, and a general feeling of illness.
  • Digestive tract problems.
  • Different types of blood cancers (after long-term treatment).
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining (stomatitis).
  • Severe decrease in all blood cells (pancytopenia), causing weakness, bruising, and increased risk of infection.
  • Addison's disease (adrenal glands not working well), causing skin darkening, stomach problems, low blood pressure, and general weakness.
  • Sweating, shaking, and hunger due to low blood sugar.
  • Tingling and numbness (paresthesia).
  • Weakened heart muscle due to structural changes (cardiomyopathy).
  • Shortness of breath (lung inflammation, scarring, and lung infections).
  • Increased liver values (fatigue, pressure in upper right abdomen, yellowing of eyes/skin), hives or itchy rash, skin inflammation, skin redness.
  • Bladder inflammation, causing pain, frequent/urgent urination, with or without bloody urine.
  • General feeling of illness (flu-like symptoms).
  • Pain or swelling at the injection site (if treosulfan solution leaks into surrounding tissue).
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to treosulfan.
  • Do not use if you have too few blood cells (severe bone marrow depression).
  • Do not breastfeed during treatment.
  • You have an increased risk of getting infections, and you should not receive live vaccines.
  • Different types of blood cancers can occur after long-term treatment.

  • Your blood counts must be closely monitored and your dose adjusted if you have kidney problems.
  • Drink more fluids than usual for up to 24 hours after treatment to prevent bladder inflammation.
  • Women of childbearing age must use effective contraception during and for 6 months after treatment.
  • If you feel pain at the injection site, tell your doctor or nurse immediately.
