How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose based on your weight and condition. For adults and children weighing at least 50 kg, the usual starting dose is 50 mg twice a day, gradually increasing to a maintenance dose of 100-300 mg twice a day. For children under 50 kg, the dose is calculated based on their weight and is also taken twice a day.

Method

This medicine is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion by a doctor or nurse, usually for 15-60 minutes. It's typically used for a short time if you cannot take oral medication. You should take it twice a day, about 12 hours apart, and try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor, usually up to 600 mg per day for adults.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Double vision
  • Sudden muscle twitches
  • Difficulty coordinating movements or walking
  • Balance problems, trembling, tingling, muscle spasms, falling, and bruising easily
  • Memory problems, difficulty thinking or finding words, confusion
  • Fast, uncontrolled eye movements, blurred vision
  • Spinning sensation, feeling drunk
  • Vomiting, dry mouth, constipation, indigestion, gas, diarrhea
  • Reduced sensation, difficulty speaking, attention problems
  • Ringing, humming, or whistling in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Irritability, sleep problems, depression
  • Drowsiness, tiredness, or weakness
  • Itching, skin rash
  • Pain, discomfort, or irritation at the injection site (for IV infusion)
  • Fever (in children)
  • Runny nose (in children)
  • Sore throat (in children)
  • Decreased appetite (in children)
  • Changes in behavior, unusual behavior, and lack of energy (in children)
RARE
  • Slow heartbeat, palpitations, irregular pulse, or other changes in heart's electrical activity
  • Excessive feeling of well-being, seeing and/or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Allergic reaction to the medicine, hives
  • Blood tests showing abnormal liver function, liver damage
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, or suicide attempt
  • Feelings of anger or agitation
  • Unusual thoughts or feeling disconnected from reality
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, throat, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • Fainting
  • Uncontrolled, involuntary movements (dyskinesia)
  • Redness at the injection site (for IV infusion)
  • Abnormally fast heartbeat (ventricular tachyarrhythmia)
  • Sore throat, high fever, and more frequent infections. Blood tests may show a severe decrease in certain white blood cell types.
  • Severe skin reaction with fever, flu-like symptoms, facial rash, widespread rash, swollen glands. Blood tests may show increased liver enzymes and a type of white blood cell (eosinophilia).
  • Widespread rash with blisters and skin peeling, especially around the mouth, nose, eyes, and genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), and a more severe form where over 30% of skin surface peels off (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Seizures (new or worsened)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to lacosamide or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a certain severe heart rhythm problem (second or third-degree AV block).
  • Contact your doctor right away if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems that affect your heartbeat, or if you often have a very slow, fast, or irregular pulse, severe heart disease, or have had a heart attack.
  • Be careful as this medicine can cause dizziness or blurred vision, which increases the risk of falls. Do not drive or operate machines until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Common adverse effects include dizziness and nausea. (updated 6.10.2025)
