How to Use

Dosage

Before surgery, you will get a small 1 ml test dose. If no allergy, you will receive 100-200 ml over 20-30 minutes, followed by 25-50 ml per hour until the end of the surgery.

Method

The medicine is given slowly into a vein through a catheter (as a drip) while you are lying down.

Important

You will generally not receive more than 700 ml of Trasylol at one time.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Higher creatinine levels in the blood
RARE
  • Allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, itching, rash, hives, nausea, or severe, life-threatening allergic shock
  • Chest pain, heart attack, or fluid buildup around the heart
  • Blood clots in blood vessels, including in the lungs or brain (stroke)
  • Kidney disease, acute kidney failure, or decreased urine output
  • Swelling or inflammation at the injection or infusion site
  • Severe blood clotting disorder that can lead to tissue damage or bleeding

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to aprotinin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a positive test for aprotinin-specific antibodies, as this means a higher risk of severe allergic reactions.
  • Do not use if you have been treated with Trasylol or suspect you have received it in the last 12 months, and an antibody test cannot be done.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. Trasylol may only be used if your doctor determines the benefits outweigh the risks.
  • You will be closely monitored for allergic reactions, and emergency equipment will be available for severe reactions.
