How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children over 12 is 100 mg, taken twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, do not break or chew them. Take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, with at least 8 hours between doses, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 400 mg of tramadol per day, unless your doctor tells you to for specific medical reasons.

  • Muscle weakness, coordination problems, speech issues
  • Difficult or painful urination, reduced urine output
  • Changes in liver function test results (in blood tests)
  • Serotonin syndrome (can include mental changes, fever, fast heart rate, muscle stiffness)
  • Low blood sugar levels, hiccups

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to tramadol or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have acute poisoning from alcohol, sleeping pills, other strong pain relievers, opioids, or medicines that affect your mood.
  • Do not take if you are currently using or have used MAO inhibitors (medicines for depression or Parkinson's disease) in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you have epilepsy and your seizures are not well-controlled by treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have breathing difficulties, especially sleep-related breathing problems like sleep apnea (pauses in breathing during sleep).

  • This medicine can cause dependence. If you feel you can't control how much medicine you take, or if you get sick when you stop taking it, talk to your doctor.
  • There is a small risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome, especially if taken with certain antidepressants. Seek medical help immediately if you have symptoms like confusion, fast heart rate, sweating, muscle stiffness, or severe nausea.
  • Contact your doctor if you experience extreme tiredness, lack of appetite, severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or low blood pressure, as these could be signs of adrenal insufficiency.
  • Taking this medicine with sedatives (like benzodiazepines) can increase the risk of severe drowsiness, breathing problems, and coma. Your doctor will carefully limit the dose and duration if prescribed together.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. Prodrug. Genotype affects the response. Reduce the dose in moderately severe and severe renal impairment. Increases the risk of confusion and falling. Need for laxative is often necessary. Consider potential interactions. (updated 18.8.2025)
