How to Use

Dosage

For ovarian or small-cell lung cancer, the dose is 1.5 mg per square meter of your body surface area daily. For cervical cancer, the dose is 0.75 mg per square meter of your body surface area daily.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Topotecan Accord as an infusion (drip) into a vein in your arm over about 30 minutes in a hospital. This is typically given once a day for 5 days (for ovarian or small-cell lung cancer) or for 3 days (for cervical cancer).

Important

The maximum daily dose is 1.5 mg per square meter of body surface area for ovarian or small-cell lung cancer, and 0.75 mg per square meter for cervical cancer, given once per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Symptoms of infection, such as fever, severe general weakness, sore throat, difficulty urinating, or severe stomach pain with fever and possibly diarrhea (may be signs of bowel inflammation).
  • Feeling generally weak and tired (temporary anemia); sometimes a blood transfusion is needed.
  • Unusually low white blood cell count (neutropenia), which can cause fever and signs of infection.
  • Easy bruising or bleeding, caused by a decrease in blood clotting cells (platelets).
  • Weight loss, loss of appetite, tiredness, and weakness.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation.
  • Inflammation and sores in the mouth, on the tongue, or gums.
  • Fever.
  • Hair loss.
  • Allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, including skin rash.
  • Yellowing of the skin (jaundice).
  • Itching.
  • Feeling generally unwell (malaise).
  • Deficiency of all three types of blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets) in the blood (pancytopenia).
RARE
  • Severe allergic or anaphylactic reactions, which can cause swelling of lips, face, or neck, severe difficulty breathing, rash or hives, or anaphylactic shock (a severe drop in blood pressure, paleness, agitation, weak pulse, and loss of consciousness).
  • Lung inflammation (interstitial lung disease), with symptoms such as difficulty breathing, cough, and fever.
  • Swelling due to fluid retention in the body (angioedema).
  • Mild pain and inflammation at the injection site.
  • Itchy rash (or hives).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Topotecan Accord if you are allergic to topotecan or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if your blood cell counts are too low. Your doctor will tell you based on your latest blood test.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, as your dose may need to be adjusted.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medicine can harm an unborn baby.

  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel tired or weak, as Topotecan Accord can make you feel fatigued.
