How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the dose and gradually increase it to find the right amount for you.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole; do not chew them as they may taste bitter. You can take them with or without food. Drink plenty of water daily to help prevent kidney stones.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression (new or worsening)
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety, irritability, mood changes, confusion, feeling lost
  • Difficulty concentrating, slow thinking, memory loss, new or worsening memory problems
  • Kidney stones, frequent urge to urinate, or painful urination
  • Stuffy nose, runny nose, or sore throat
  • Tingling, pain, and/or numbness in different body parts
  • Drowsiness, fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., rash, redness, itching, facial swelling, hives)
  • Loss or decreased appetite
  • Aggression, agitation, anger, abnormal behavior
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Speech difficulties or slurred speech
  • Clumsiness or poor coordination, unsteady gait
  • Difficulty performing normal daily tasks
  • Reduced, altered, or lost sense of taste
  • Involuntary shaking or tremors, rapid and uncontrollable eye movements
  • Vision problems, e.g., double vision, blurred vision, reduced vision, difficulty focusing eyes
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in the ears, ear pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Nosebleed
  • Fever, general unwellness, weakness
  • Vomiting, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, stomach or intestinal infection
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Itching
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or spasms, muscle aches or weakness, chest pain
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Too much acid in the blood (can cause breathing difficulties, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, or rapid heartbeat)
  • Reduced or no sweating (especially in small children exposed to high temperatures)
  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • Partial loss of vision in part of your visual field
  • Glaucoma (eye pain, increased eye pressure, vision loss due to fluid buildup in the eye)
  • Difficulty thinking or remembering, problems solving issues, reduced alertness or awareness, severe drowsiness and lack of energy (may indicate high blood ammonia affecting brain function)
  • Severe skin reactions (rash, blisters, skin irritation, sores or swelling around the mouth, throat, nose, eyes, and genitals, potentially life-threatening skin damage)
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis), with symptoms such as eye redness, pain, sensitivity to light, watery eyes, seeing small spots, or blurred vision
  • Low platelet count (blood cells that help blood clot), low white blood cell count (which help fight infections), low potassium in the blood
  • Increased liver enzyme levels, increased eosinophil count (a type of white blood cell) in the blood
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Increased appetite
  • Elevated mood
  • Hallucinations of hearing, sight, or touch; severe mental disorder (psychosis)
  • Difficulty expressing emotions and/or lack of emotion, unusual suspiciousness, panic attacks
  • Difficulty reading, speech disorders, difficulty writing by hand
  • Restlessness, hyperactivity
  • Slow thinking, reduced alertness or attentiveness
  • Reduced or slow body movements, involuntary, abnormal, or repetitive muscle movements
  • Fainting
  • Abnormal sensations of touch, reduced sense of touch; reduced, distorted, or lost sense of smell
  • Unusual sensations that may precede a migraine or a certain type of epileptic seizure
  • Dry eyes, light sensitivity in eyes, eyelid twitching, watery eyes
  • Reduced hearing or deafness, deafness in one ear
  • Slow heartbeat or irregular heartbeat, palpitations
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure upon standing (may cause fainting, weakness, or dizziness when standing up suddenly)
  • Flushing, feeling hot
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Gas, heartburn, feeling of fullness or bloating in the stomach
  • Bleeding gums, increased saliva production, drooling, bad breath
  • Abnormally large intake of fluids, thirst
  • Skin discoloration
  • Muscle stiffness, side pain
  • Blood in urine, urinary incontinence (inability to control urination), urgent need to urinate, flank or kidney pain
  • Erectile dysfunction, sexual dysfunction
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Feeling of intoxication
  • Learning difficulties
  • Abnormally high mood
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness
  • Vision impairment in one eye (lazy eye)
  • Swelling in and around the eyes
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white, blue, then red) in fingers and toes when exposed to cold
  • Liver inflammation, liver failure
  • Abnormal skin odor
  • Unpleasant sensation in hands or feet
  • Kidney disease
  • Maculopathy, a disease of the macula (the part of the retina with the sharpest vision). If you notice changes or worsening in your vision, contact your doctor.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, can become pregnant, or are trying to get pregnant, talk to your doctor. This medicine can harm an unborn baby. Use effective contraception during treatment.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first, especially if you have epilepsy, as it could worsen your condition.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or eye problems (like glaucoma), or if you have had abnormal blood acidity.
  • Topiramat Sandoz can cause weight loss. Monitor your weight and tell your doctor if you lose too much weight.

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If your blood ammonia levels rise and cause changes in brain function, such as difficulty thinking or drowsiness, contact your doctor immediately.
