How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and slowly increase it until the best dose for you is found.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole. Do not chew them as they may taste bitter. You can take Topiramat Sandoz with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to help prevent kidney stones.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression (feeling very sad or down)
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Feeling anxious, easily irritated, mood swings, confusion, feeling lost
  • Trouble focusing, slow thinking, forgetting things, memory problems (new or worse)
  • Kidney stones, needing to pee often or pain when peeing
  • Stuffy or runny nose, sore throat
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in body parts
  • Feeling sleepy or tired
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick (nausea), diarrhea
  • Losing weight
  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Allergic reaction (like a rash, red skin, itching, swollen face, or hives)
  • Not feeling hungry or eating less
  • Being aggressive, easily upset, angry, or acting unusually
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Trouble speaking clearly or slurred speech
  • Clumsiness, trouble with coordination, feeling unsteady when walking
  • Trouble doing everyday tasks
  • Taste changes (less, worse, or no taste)
  • Shaking (tremors) you can't control, fast eye movements you can't control
  • Vision problems, like seeing double, blurry vision, weaker eyesight, or trouble focusing
  • Feeling like you're spinning (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Nosebleeds
  • Fever, feeling unwell, weakness
  • Vomiting (throwing up), constipation, belly pain or discomfort, upset stomach, stomach or gut infection
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Itching
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or twitches, muscle aches or weakness, chest pain
  • Gaining weight
RARE
  • Too much acid in the blood, causing trouble breathing, loss of appetite, feeling sick, throwing up, extreme tiredness, or a fast or uneven heartbeat.
  • Sweating less or not at all (especially in children when it's hot).
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself or suicide.
  • Losing part of your vision.
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye that can cause pain and blurry vision).
  • Trouble thinking clearly, remembering, or solving problems; being less alert; feeling very sleepy and low on energy (these could be signs of high ammonia in the blood affecting the brain).
  • Severe skin reactions, like rashes with blisters, irritated skin, sores or swelling in the mouth, throat, nose, eyes, or genital area. These can be life-threatening.
  • Low numbers of blood cells that help stop bleeding, low white blood cells that fight infection, low potassium in the blood, higher liver enzymes, higher eosinophils (a type of white blood cell), swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin.
  • Increased hunger.
  • Feeling overly happy or excited.
  • Seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there; severe mental problems (psychosis).
  • Trouble showing feelings or feeling nothing, being unusually suspicious, panic attacks.
  • Trouble reading, speaking, or writing.
  • Feeling restless or overly active.
  • Slow thinking, reduced alertness and focus.
  • Slow or reduced body movements, muscle movements you can't control.
  • Fainting.
  • Strange or reduced sense of touch.
  • Changes in smell (less, worse, or no smell).
  • Unusual feelings before a migraine or certain types of seizures.
  • Dry eyes, eyes sensitive to light, twitching eyelids, watery eyes.
  • Hearing loss or being deaf, deaf in one ear.
  • Slow or uneven heartbeat, feeling your heart pound.
  • Low blood pressure, especially when standing up (can make you feel weak, dizzy, or faint).
  • Flushing (red face), feeling hot.
  • Pancreatitis (swelling of the pancreas).
  • Lots of gas, heartburn, feeling full or bloated in the belly.
  • Bleeding gums, more saliva, drooling, bad breath.
  • Drinking too much liquid, feeling very thirsty.
  • Skin color changes.
  • Stiff muscles, pain in your side.
  • Blood in urine, not being able to hold pee, strong need to pee, pain in the kidney area or kidneys.
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection, sexual problems.
  • Flu-like symptoms.
  • Cold fingers and toes.
  • Feeling drunk.
  • Trouble learning.
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness.
  • Weak eyesight in one eye.
  • Swelling in and around the eyes.
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white, blue, then red) in fingers and toes when cold.
  • Liver inflammation, liver failure.
  • Unusual body odor.
  • Uncomfortable feeling in arms or legs.
  • Kidney disease.
  • Maculopathy (a problem with the central part of your eye's retina that affects sharp vision).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Topiramat Sandoz if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or can become pregnant, do not use Topiramat Sandoz for migraine prevention unless you use very effective birth control.
  • If you are pregnant or can become pregnant, do not use Topiramat Sandoz for epilepsy unless it's the only way to control your seizures and you use very effective birth control.
  • If you have epilepsy, do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor first.
  • Monitor your weight regularly while taking this medicine; contact your doctor if you lose too much weight or if a child's weight development is not as expected.

  • Topiramat Sandoz can cause severe skin reactions; tell your doctor immediately if you develop a rash and/or blisters.
  • Some people taking epilepsy medicines like Topiramat Sandoz have had suicidal thoughts; contact your doctor immediately if you experience these thoughts.
  • Topiramat Sandoz can rarely increase blood ammonia levels, which may affect brain function; tell your doctor immediately if you have trouble thinking, remembering, staying alert, or feel very sleepy and tired.
