How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the correct dose, usually starting with a low dose that is slowly increased.

Method

Swallow tablets whole without chewing. You can take the medicine with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to help prevent kidney stones.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

RARE
  • Increased acid in the blood (can cause breathing problems, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Less or no sweating (especially in children exposed to high temperatures)
  • Thoughts of harming yourself, attempting to harm yourself
  • Partial loss of vision in one part of your visual field
  • Low number of platelets (blood cells that help stop bleeding)
  • Low number of white blood cells (that protect against infection)
  • Low potassium levels in the blood
  • Increased liver enzyme levels
  • Increased number of eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood
  • Swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Increased appetite
  • Elevated mood
  • Hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Severe mental disorder (psychosis)
  • Difficulty showing or lacking feelings, unusual suspicion, panic attacks
  • Reading, speech, or handwriting difficulties
  • Restlessness, hyperactivity
  • Slowed thinking, reduced alertness or attention
  • Reduced or slow body movements, involuntary, unusual, or repeated muscle movements
  • Fainting
  • Abnormal or decreased sense of touch
  • Decreased, distorted, or lost sense of smell
  • Unusual sensations that may occur before a migraine or certain types of seizures
  • Dry eyes, light sensitivity, eyelid twitching, watery eyes
  • Hearing loss or deafness, deafness in one ear
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat, palpitations
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure when standing up (can cause faintness or dizziness)
  • Flushing, hot flushes
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Gas, heartburn, feeling full or bloated
  • Bleeding gums, increased saliva, drooling, bad breath
  • Abnormally high fluid intake, thirst
  • Skin discoloration
  • Muscle stiffness, pain in the side
  • Blood in urine, inability to control urination, strong urge to urinate, flank or kidney pain
  • Erectile dysfunction, sexual problems
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Feeling drunk
  • Learning difficulties
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye, eye pain, blurred vision)
  • Difficulty thinking, remembering, or staying alert; feeling very sleepy (signs of high ammonia in blood that can affect brain function)
  • Severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can cause widespread rash and blistering, peeling skin)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness
  • Weak vision in one eye (lazy eye)
  • Swelling in and around the eyes
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes (white, blue, then red) in fingers and toes when exposed to cold
  • Liver inflammation, liver failure
  • Abnormal skin odor
  • Discomfort in arms or legs
  • Kidney disease
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis), with symptoms like red eyes, pain, light sensitivity, watery eyes, seeing small spots, or blurry vision
  • Maculopathy (a disease of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision, causing changes or worsening of vision)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as it can harm the fetus or child. If you can become pregnant, use highly effective birth control during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or eye problems (like glaucoma), blood acidity issues (metabolic acidosis), growth problems, or if you are on a ketogenic diet.
  • Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly, especially if you have epilepsy; talk to your doctor first.
  • Your weight might decrease during treatment; monitor your weight and your child's growth.

  • If you develop a rash or blisters, tell your doctor right away, as these could be severe skin reactions.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Topiramat Sandoz.
  • Hormonal birth control may not work as well; use extra protection.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
