How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start you on a low dose and slowly increase it until the best dose for you is found.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole; do not chew them as they may taste bitter. You can take them with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to help prevent kidney stones.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. Do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression (new or worsening)
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety, irritability, mood changes, confusion, disorientation (time and place)
  • Difficulty concentrating, slow thinking, memory loss, memory problems (new or worsening)
  • Kidney stones, frequent urination or painful urination
  • Stuffy nose, runny nose or sore throat
  • Tingling, pain and/or numbness in different parts of the body
  • Drowsiness, tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Allergic reaction (e.g. rash, redness, itching, facial swelling, hives)
  • Loss or decreased appetite
  • Aggressiveness, agitation, anger, abnormal behavior
  • Difficulty falling asleep or sleeping
  • Speech difficulties or disorders, slurred speech
  • Clumsiness or coordination problems, unsteady gait
  • Difficulty performing daily tasks
  • Decreased, lost or no sense of taste
  • Involuntary tremor or shaking, rapid and involuntary eye movements
  • Vision problems, e.g., double vision, blurred vision, reduced vision, difficulty focusing eyes
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in ears, ear pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Nosebleed
  • Fever, feeling unwell, weakness
  • Vomiting, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, stomach or intestinal infection
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Itching
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle spasms or twitching, muscle pain or weakness, chest pain
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Increased acid in the blood (can cause breathing difficulties like shortness of breath, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, and fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Decreased or no sweating (especially in young children exposed to high temperatures)
  • Thoughts of self-harm, attempting self-harm
  • Partial loss of visual field
  • Decreased platelets (blood cells that help stop bleeding), decreased white blood cells (that help protect against infections), low potassium in the blood
  • Increased liver enzymes, increased eosinophils (a type of white blood cell) in the blood
  • Swollen glands in the neck, armpits or groin
  • Increased appetite
  • Elevated mood
  • Hearing, seeing or feeling things that are not there, severe mental disorder (psychosis)
  • Difficulty showing feelings and/or lack of emotions, unusual suspiciousness, panic attacks
  • Difficulty reading, speech disorders, difficulty writing by hand
  • Restlessness, hyperactivity
  • Slow thinking, reduced alertness or attention
  • Reduced or slow body movements, involuntary, abnormal or repetitive muscle movements
  • Fainting
  • Abnormal or reduced sense of touch
  • Decreased, distorted or lost sense of smell
  • Unusual sensations that may precede a migraine attack or a certain type of epileptic seizure
  • Dry eyes, light sensitivity, eyelid twitching, watery eyes
  • Decreased or lost hearing, deafness in one ear
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat, feeling heart beat in chest
  • Low blood pressure, low blood pressure when standing up (some people may feel weak, dizzy or faint when standing up suddenly)
  • Flushing, feeling hot
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Gas, heartburn, stomach fullness or bloating
  • Bleeding gums, increased saliva production, drooling, bad breath
  • Unusually high fluid intake, thirst
  • Skin discoloration
  • Muscle stiffness, side pain
  • Blood in urine, urinary incontinence, urgent need to urinate, side or kidney pain
  • Erectile dysfunction, sexual dysfunction
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Feeling drunk
  • Learning difficulties
  • Glaucoma (fluid buildup in the eye leading to increased eye pressure, pain, and vision loss)
  • Abnormally elevated mood
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Swelling in and around the eyes
  • Tingling, numbness and color changes (pale to bluish then red) in fingers and toes when exposed to cold
  • Liver inflammation, liver failure
  • Unusual skin odor
  • Unpleasant feeling in hands or feet
  • Kidney dysfunction
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis), with symptoms such as eye redness, pain, light sensitivity, watery eyes, seeing small spots or blurred vision
  • Maculopathy (a disease of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision). Contact your doctor if you notice changes or worsening in your vision.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Topiramat Sandoz if you are pregnant, unless your doctor says it's the only way to control your seizures. If you are a woman who can get pregnant, you must use highly effective birth control during treatment and for at least 4 weeks after the last dose. Topiramat Sandoz can harm an unborn baby.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems (especially kidney stones or dialysis), liver problems, or eye problems (like glaucoma).
  • Inform your doctor if you have had unusual levels of acid in your blood (metabolic acidosis).
  • Your weight might decrease. Monitor your weight and tell your doctor if you lose too much weight, or if a child taking this medicine does not gain weight as expected.
  • Some people taking Topiramat Sandoz have had thoughts of harming themselves or committing suicide. If you have these thoughts at any time, contact your doctor immediately.

  • This medicine can cause severe skin reactions. Tell your doctor right away if you develop a rash or blisters.
  • In rare cases, Topiramat Sandoz can increase ammonia levels in your blood, especially if taken with valproic acid. This can affect your brain. Tell your doctor immediately if you have trouble thinking, remembering, or solving problems, feel less alert, or feel very sleepy and tired.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Topiramat Sandoz.
