How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and slowly increase it until the right amount is found for you.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with or without food; do not chew them. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day to prevent kidney stones.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose that is safe for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling down or sad (depression)
  • Numbness, tingling, or pain in different body parts
  • Feeling sleepy or tired
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea) or having loose stools (diarrhea)
  • Losing weight
  • Nasal congestion, runny nose, or sore throat
  • Seizures
  • Feeling anxious, irritable, angry, or confused; mood changes
  • Trouble concentrating, slow thinking, or memory problems
  • Kidney stones; needing to urinate often or pain when urinating
  • Low red blood cells (anemia)
  • Allergic reactions like rash, redness, itching, or swelling of the face
  • Loss of appetite or less desire to eat
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Speech problems or slurred speech
  • Clumsiness or problems with coordination, making it hard to walk steadily
  • Changes in taste, like not being able to taste well
  • Shaking (tremor) or fast, uncontrolled eye movements
  • Vision problems, such as double vision, blurred vision, or trouble focusing
  • Feeling like the room is spinning (vertigo), ringing in the ears, or ear pain
  • Shortness of breath or cough
  • Nosebleed
  • Fever, feeling unwell, or weakness
  • Vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, or stomach flu
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Itching
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or twitching, muscle aches or weakness, chest pain
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Too much acid in the blood (metabolic acidosis), which can cause breathing problems, poor appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, or fast/irregular heartbeat.
  • Reduced or no sweating, especially in young children exposed to high temperatures.
  • Thoughts or attempts to harm yourself.
  • Loss of part of your field of vision.
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye), causing pain and blurred vision.
  • Serious skin rashes, like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which can cause blisters and peeling skin.
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis) with symptoms like red, painful, or watery eyes, light sensitivity, or blurry vision.
  • Abnormally high mood (mania).
  • Passing out or losing consciousness.
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, or trouble seeing in the dark (night blindness).
  • Swelling in and around the eyes.
  • Liver inflammation or liver failure.
  • Kidney disease.
  • Maculopathy (a disease of the central part of the retina that affects sharp vision).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or could become pregnant, unless no other treatment can control your seizures, as it can harm an unborn baby.
  • If you are a woman who can become pregnant, you must use very effective birth control during treatment and for at least 4 weeks after your last dose.
  • Talk to your doctor right away if you have thoughts about harming yourself or ending your life.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you develop a rash or blisters, as this medicine can cause severe skin reactions.
  • Do not stop taking Topiramat Sandoz suddenly without talking to your doctor, as your symptoms might return or worsen.
