How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and slowly increase it until the best dose for you is found.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of fluids. Do not chew them as they may taste bitter. You can take this medicine with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression
  • Anxiety, irritability, mood changes, confusion
  • Numbness, tingling, or pain in body parts
  • Drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness
  • Trouble concentrating, slow thinking, memory problems
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain
  • Weight loss
  • Kidney stones, frequent or painful urination
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling)
  • Loss or decreased appetite
  • Aggression, abnormal behavior
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Speech problems, clumsiness, unsteady walk
  • Blurred vision, double vision, trouble focusing eyes
  • Stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, nosebleed
  • Fever, feeling unwell, weakness
  • Joint pain, muscle pain or cramps
  • Changes in taste
  • Hair loss, itching
RARE
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide
  • Severe skin reactions (rashes, blisters)
  • High ammonia levels in blood (can cause trouble thinking, confusion, extreme sleepiness)
  • Glaucoma (high pressure in the eye, affecting vision), eye inflammation (redness, pain, light sensitivity, blurry vision)
  • Acid in the blood (metabolic acidosis, causing breathing problems, tiredness)
  • Decreased sweating, feeling too hot
  • Liver problems (inflammation, failure)
  • Kidney problems
  • Changes in blood counts (low red or white blood cells)
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there), severe mental problems, paranoia, panic attacks
  • Loss of consciousness, temporary or night blindness, lazy eye
  • Unusual thirst, or drinking too much water
  • Erectile dysfunction, sexual problems
  • Heart rate changes (slow or irregular heartbeat)
  • Cold fingers and toes (Raynaud's phenomenon)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredients.
  • If you are pregnant or could become pregnant and are not using very effective birth control, do not use this medicine for migraine prevention. This medicine can harm an unborn baby.
  • If you are pregnant or could become pregnant, talk to your doctor about the risks before taking this medicine for epilepsy, as it can harm an unborn baby.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, especially if you have epilepsy, as your condition might worsen.
  • Some people taking this medicine have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor right away.

  • This medicine can cause severe skin reactions. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop a rash or blisters.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems (especially kidney stones), liver problems, or eye problems (especially glaucoma).
  • Your weight might decrease while taking this medicine. Your doctor will monitor your weight and may adjust treatment if needed.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Rarely, this medicine can increase ammonia levels in your blood, which might affect your brain function. Tell your doctor immediately if you have trouble thinking, memory problems, feel less alert, or are very sleepy.
