How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for you.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with plenty of fluids daily to prevent kidney stones. You can take them with or without food. Do not chew, as they taste bitter.

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor and should not be exceeded.

  • Loss of appetite, reduced appetite
  • Aggression, agitation, anger, abnormal behavior
  • Sleep problems (difficulty falling asleep or interrupted sleep)
  • Speech problems (difficulties, slurred speech)
  • Clumsiness, poor coordination, feeling unsteady when walking
  • Reduced ability to perform routine tasks
  • Taste changes (weakened, lost, or absent)
  • Involuntary trembling or shaking, rapid uncontrolled eye movements
  • Vision problems (double vision, blurred vision, reduced vision, difficulty focusing)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo), ringing in the ears, ear pain
  • Shortness of breath, cough
  • Nosebleed
  • Fever, malaise, weakness
  • Vomiting, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, stomach or intestinal infection

  • Hair loss, itching
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or twitching, muscle pain or weakness, chest pain

RARE
  • Increased blood acidity (with symptoms like breathing difficulties, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, rapid/irregular heartbeat)
  • Reduced or absent sweating (especially in small children in hot weather)
  • Severe suicidal thoughts and attempts to self-harm
  • Partial loss of visual field
  • Glaucoma (fluid blockage, increased eye pressure, eye pain, vision worsening)
  • Severe brain function changes (difficulty thinking, memory problems, reduced alertness, severe drowsiness) due to high blood ammonia
  • Severe skin reactions (widespread skin damage, blisters, sores in mouth, throat, eyes, genitals, skin peeling)
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis: red eyes, pain, light sensitivity, tearing, small spots in vision, blurred vision)
  • Maculopathy (disease of the retina's macula, changes or worsening of vision)
  • Decreased blood platelets, white blood cells, or potassium in blood
  • Increased liver enzymes or eosinophils in blood
  • Swollen glands (in neck, armpit, groin)
  • Increased appetite
  • Elevated mood, abnormally elevated mood
  • Hallucinations, psychosis (hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not there)
  • Lack of emotions, unusual suspicion, panic attacks
  • Restlessness, hyperactivity
  • Reduced or slow body movements, involuntary abnormal or repetitive muscle movements
  • Fainting, low blood pressure (especially when standing up)
  • Abnormal or reduced sensation, impaired/distorted/absent sense of smell
  • Unusual sensation or feeling that precedes migraine or certain type of seizure
  • Dry eyes, light sensitivity, involuntary eye twitching, watery eyes
  • Reduced or lost hearing, hearing loss in one ear
  • Slow or irregular heartbeat, feeling heart pounding in chest
  • Redness, feeling hot
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas)
  • Gas, heartburn, feeling full or bloated
  • Bleeding gums, increased saliva, drooling, bad breath
  • Drinking unusually large amounts of fluid, increased thirst
  • Discolored skin
  • Muscle stiffness, pain in side
  • Blood in urine, incontinence, difficulty getting or keeping an erection, sexual dysfunction
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Feeling drunk, learning problems
  • Unconsciousness
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness, weak vision, swelling in and around eyes
  • Numbness, tingling and color changes (white, blue then red) in fingers and toes when exposed to cold
  • Liver inflammation, liver failure
  • Abnormal skin odor
  • Discomfort in arms or legs
  • Kidney disease

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in it.
  • If you are a woman who can become pregnant, you must use very effective birth control during treatment and for at least 4 weeks after your last dose, as this medicine can harm an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor about contraception.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, especially for migraine prevention. For epilepsy, only use if no other treatment can control your seizures, and after discussing risks with your doctor.
  • If you have epilepsy, do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as your symptoms may worsen.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicidal thoughts.

  • Tell your doctor right away if you develop a rash or blisters on your skin, as these can be serious and require immediate medical attention.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have trouble thinking, remembering, staying awake, or feel very sleepy, as this could be a sign of a serious change in brain function.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if you experience dizziness, fatigue, or vision problems, until you have talked to your doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Topiramat ratiopharm.
  • Your weight should be regularly checked while taking this medicine. Contact your doctor if you lose too much weight, especially for children.
