How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the right dose for you; treatment usually starts with a low dose and is slowly increased.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole. Do not chew them as they taste bitter. You can take the medicine with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids daily to help prevent kidney stones.

  • Feeling sad or depressed (new or worse)
  • Seizures
  • Feeling anxious, irritable, or mood changes
  • Problems with focus, slow thinking, or memory issues
  • Kidney stones, frequent or painful urination
  • Tingling, numbness, or pain in body parts
  • Drowsiness, tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Allergic reactions (like rash, redness, itching, facial swelling)
  • Poor appetite, reduced hunger
  • Trouble speaking, slurred speech
  • Vision problems (like double vision, blurry vision, reduced eyesight)
  • Vomiting, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort
  • Hair loss
RARE
  • Increased acid in blood (may cause fast breathing, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, strong tiredness, fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Reduced or no sweating (especially in young children exposed to high temperatures)
  • Serious thoughts of self-harm or suicide attempts
  • Partial loss of vision, glaucoma (high pressure in the eye with pain or reduced vision)
  • Trouble thinking, remembering, or solving problems, reduced alertness, feeling very sleepy or low in energy (may be signs of high ammonia in blood affecting brain function)
  • Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (rash with or without blisters, skin irritation, sores or swelling in mouth, throat, nose, eyes, genitals, widespread severe skin damage)
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis) with symptoms like red eye, pain, light sensitivity, watery eyes, small spots in vision, or blurry vision

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, or if you can become pregnant and are not using very effective birth control.
  • If you have epilepsy, do not stop taking this medicine without first talking to your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get a rash, blisters, or have thoughts of harming yourself.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems; do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
