How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your exact dose, starting low and increasing it slowly to find what works best.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water; do not chew them because they taste bitter. You can take them with or without food. Drink plenty of water during the day to prevent kidney stones.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose.

  • Feeling sad or depressed (new or worse)
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in different body parts

  • Stuffy or runny nose, sore throat

  • Feeling anxious, irritable, mood changes, confusion, or not knowing where you are
  • Problems with concentration, slow thinking, forgetfulness, or memory issues
  • Kidney stones, needing to pee often or pain when peeing
  • Anemia (low blood count)
  • Allergic reactions like rash, redness, itching, swollen face, or hives
  • Not feeling hungry or having a poor appetite
  • Being aggressive, agitated, angry, or acting strangely
  • Trouble falling asleep or waking up often
  • Trouble speaking clearly or slurred speech
  • Feeling clumsy, uncoordinated, or having trouble balancing when walking

  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or twitching, muscle pain or weakness, or chest pain
  • Gaining weight
RARE
  • Increased acid in your blood (may cause fast breathing, not feeling hungry, sickness, throwing up, extreme tiredness, or fast/uneven heartbeats)
  • Sweating less or not at all (especially in children in hot weather)
  • Serious thoughts of hurting yourself or trying to do so
  • Missing parts of your vision
  • Glaucoma (eye pain, blurry vision, or pressure in your eye from fluid buildup)
  • Trouble thinking, remembering, or solving problems; feeling less aware, very sleepy, or lacking energy (may be a sign of high ammonia in your blood affecting your brain)
  • Very bad skin reactions, like rashes with or without blisters, irritated skin, sores or swelling around your mouth, throat, nose, eyes, or genitals, or widespread peeling of your skin (life-threatening)
  • Eye inflammation (redness, pain, light sensitivity, watery eyes, seeing small spots, or blurry vision)
  • Maculopathy (a problem with the central part of your vision, tell your doctor if your vision changes or gets worse)
  • Low numbers of blood cells that stop bleeding (platelets), low white blood cells (which fight infection), or low potassium in your blood
  • High levels of liver enzymes or certain white blood cells (eosinophils) in your blood
  • Swollen glands in your neck, armpits, or groin
  • Feeling more hungry than usual
  • Feeling unusually happy or excited
  • Hearing, seeing, or feeling things that are not real (psychosis)
  • Not showing feelings, being unusually suspicious, or having panic attacks
  • Trouble reading, speaking, or writing by hand
  • Feeling restless or overly active
  • Slow thinking or feeling less aware
  • Slowed or odd body movements, or movements you can't control
  • Strange or reduced feelings in your skin
  • Changes in smell, or not being able to smell
  • Strange feelings before a migraine or seizure
  • Dry or watery eyes, sensitive to light, or eyelid twitching
  • Hearing problems, or not hearing in one ear
  • Slow or uneven heartbeat, or feeling your heart pound
  • Low blood pressure, especially when standing up, making you feel weak, dizzy, or faint
  • Flushing or feeling warm
  • Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)
  • Lots of gas, heartburn, or feeling full/bloated in your stomach
  • Bleeding gums, lots of saliva, drooling, or bad breath
  • Drinking too much or feeling very thirsty
  • Changes in skin color
  • Stiff muscles or pain in your side
  • Blood in your pee, leaking pee, urgent need to pee, or pain in your side/kidney
  • Trouble getting or keeping an erection, or other sexual problems
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Cold fingers and toes
  • Feeling like you are drunk
  • Trouble learning new things
  • Losing consciousness
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, or trouble seeing at night
  • Poor eyesight
  • Swelling in or around your eyes
  • Numbness, tingling, or color changes (white, blue, then red) in fingers and toes when cold
  • Liver inflammation or liver failure
  • Strange smell from your skin
  • Uncomfortable feelings in your arms or legs
  • Kidney problems

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, unless your doctor says it's the only way to control your seizures.
  • If you are a woman who can get pregnant, you must use very effective birth control during treatment and for at least 4 weeks after your last dose.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have kidney problems (like kidney stones or dialysis), unusual blood acidity, liver disease, glaucoma (eye pressure problem), a growth problem, or are on a high-fat diet.
  • If you have epilepsy, do not stop taking your medicine without talking to your doctor first, as your seizures could get worse.

  • Your weight may change; check it often. If you lose too much weight or if a child's weight isn't normal during treatment, tell your doctor.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you have thoughts of hurting yourself or ending your life.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get a rash or blisters, as these can be serious skin problems.
  • In rare cases, this medicine can cause high ammonia in your blood, especially with other medicines. Tell your doctor if you have trouble thinking, remembering, or solving problems, feel less alert, very sleepy, or lack energy.
  • The bottle contains a small bag to keep the tablets dry; do not swallow it.
