How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it to find the best dose for you.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole; do not chew them. You can take the medicine with or without food.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression (new onset or worsening of previous depression)
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety, irritability, mood changes, confusion, disorientation (not knowing where you are or what time it is)
  • Problems with concentration, slow thinking, forgetfulness, memory problems (new memory problems, sudden change or worsening of previous memory problems)
  • Kidney stones, frequent or painful urination
  • Blocked or runny nose, sore throat
  • Tingling, pain, and/or numbness in different parts of the body
  • Drowsiness, fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia (low blood count)
  • Allergic reaction (such as rash, redness, itching, facial swelling, hives)
  • Loss of appetite, decreased appetite
  • Aggression, agitation, anger, abnormal behavior
  • Difficulty falling asleep or interrupted sleep
  • Speech difficulties or speech disorders, slurred speech
  • Clumsiness or lack of coordination, feeling unsteady when walking
  • Reduced ability to perform routine tasks
  • Decreased, lost, or absent sense of taste
  • Involuntary tremors or shaking, rapid, uncontrolled eye movements
  • Vision disturbances, such as double vision, blurred vision, impaired vision, difficulty focusing
  • Sensation of spinning (vertigo), ringing in the ears, ear pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Nosebleed
  • Fever, malaise, weakness
  • Vomiting, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, stomach or intestinal infection
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Itching
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or twitching, muscle pain or weakness, chest pain
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Increased acidity in the blood (may cause breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe fatigue, and rapid or irregular heart rate)
  • Decreased or absent sweating (especially in young children exposed to high temperatures)
  • Severe suicidal thoughts and attempts to self-harm
  • Loss of part of the field of vision
  • Glaucoma, caused by fluid buildup in the eye leading to increased eye pressure, pain, and vision loss
  • Difficulty thinking, remembering information or solving problems, reduced alertness or awareness, strong drowsiness and lack of energy, possibly due to high blood ammonia levels (hyperammonemia)
  • Severe skin reactions, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, appearing as rashes with or without blisters, skin irritation, sores or swelling in the mouth, throat, nose, eyes, and genital area; can develop into severe widespread skin damage (peeling of the epidermis and mucous membranes), which can be life-threatening.
  • Abnormally elevated mood
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness
  • Poor vision
  • Swelling inside and around the eye
  • Numbness, tingling, and discoloration (white, blue, then red) in fingers and toes when exposed to cold
  • Liver inflammation, liver failure
  • Abnormal skin odor
  • Uncomfortable sensations in the arms or legs
  • Kidney disorders

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Topiramat Orion if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease (especially kidney stones or dialysis), metabolic acidosis (abnormal blood acidity), or liver disease.
  • Inform your doctor if you have an eye condition, especially glaucoma (high eye pressure), or a growth disorder.
  • If you follow a high-fat (ketogenic) diet, tell your doctor.
  • If you are a woman who can become pregnant, Topiramat Orion can harm an unborn baby. You must use very effective birth control during treatment and for at least 4 weeks after your last dose.

  • If you are pregnant, Topiramat Orion can harm an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy.
  • Your weight may decrease while taking Topiramat Orion, so monitor your weight regularly. If your weight drops too much or a child's weight doesn't develop as expected, contact your doctor.
  • Some people taking epilepsy medicines, including Topiramat Orion, have had thoughts of harming themselves or committing suicide. If you have such thoughts at any time, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Topiramat Orion can cause severe skin reactions. Tell your doctor right away if you develop a rash and/or blisters.
  • Topiramat Orion can increase ammonia levels in the blood, especially if taken with valproate, which can affect brain function. Tell your doctor immediately if you have trouble thinking, remembering, staying awake, or feel very sleepy and tired.
