How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and slowly increase it until the best dose for you is found.

Method

Swallow tablets whole, do not chew them as they taste bitter. You can take Topimax with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids daily to help prevent kidney stones.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor, who will adjust it to your needs.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Depression (new or worse)
  • Blocked, runny nose, sore throat
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in different body parts
  • Sleepiness, tiredness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea, diarrhea
  • Weight loss
  • Seizures
  • Anxiety, irritability, mood changes, confusion, disorientation
  • Concentration problems, slow thinking, memory problems
  • Kidney stones, frequent or painful urination
RARE
  • Increased acidity in the blood (metabolic acidosis), causing trouble breathing, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, fast or uneven heartbeat
  • Reduced or no sweating, especially in small children in hot weather
  • Severe thoughts of harming oneself or suicide attempts
  • Partial loss of vision (blind spots)
  • Glaucoma, which causes increased eye pressure, pain, or vision loss
  • Difficulty thinking, remembering, solving problems; reduced alertness, severe drowsiness (may be due to high ammonia in blood)
  • Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can cause widespread skin damage and blisters
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis), symptoms include red eyes, pain, light sensitivity, watery eyes, or blurred vision
  • Maculopathy (a disease of the retina's sharpest vision spot), contact your doctor if your vision changes or worsens.

Important Warnings

  • Do not stop taking Topimax suddenly without talking to your doctor, as your condition could worsen.
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are a woman who can get pregnant, do not use Topimax for migraine prevention and discuss effective birth control methods with your doctor for epilepsy treatment.
  • Topimax can cause serious skin reactions like rashes or blisters. Tell your doctor right away if you develop any skin changes.
  • If you experience thoughts of self-harm, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Topimax may cause dizziness, tiredness, or vision problems. Do not drive or operate machinery until you have talked to your doctor.
