How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a small dose and slowly increase it to find the best dose for you.

Method

Swallow Topimax tablets whole. Do not chew them because they taste bitter. You can take this medicine with or without food. Drink plenty of water every day to help prevent kidney stones.

Important

Your doctor will tell you the maximum daily dose you should take.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sad or depressed (new or worse)
  • Seizures or fits
  • Feeling anxious, easily annoyed, mood changes, or confused
  • Trouble focusing, slow thinking, or problems remembering things
  • Kidney stones, needing to pee often, or pain when you pee
  • Blocked or runny nose, sore throat
  • Tingling, pain, or numb feelings in parts of your body
  • Feeling sleepy or very tired
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Feeling sick to your stomach or having diarrhea
  • Losing weight
  • Anemia (low blood count)
  • Allergic reactions like skin rash, redness, itching, swollen face, or hives
  • Not feeling hungry or having a bad appetite
  • Acting aggressive, agitated, or unusual
  • Trouble falling asleep or waking up often
  • Problems talking or slurred speech
  • Feeling clumsy, unsteady when walking, or having poor coordination
  • Trouble doing everyday tasks
  • Changes in or loss of taste
  • Shaking (tremors) you can't control, or fast, uncontrolled eye movements
  • Vision problems like seeing double, blurry vision, or trouble focusing
  • Feeling like you're spinning (vertigo), ringing in the ears, or ear pain
  • Feeling short of breath
  • Cough
  • Nosebleed
  • Fever, feeling unwell or weak
  • Throwing up, constipation, stomach pain or discomfort, indigestion, or stomach/gut infection
  • Dry mouth
  • Hair loss
  • Itchy skin
  • Joint pain or swelling, muscle cramps or weakness, or chest pain
  • Gaining weight
RARE
  • Too much acid in the blood (can cause breathing problems, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, severe tiredness, or fast/irregular heartbeat)
  • Sweating less or not at all (especially in children when it's hot)
  • Serious thoughts of harming yourself or trying to do so
  • Losing part of your vision
  • Glaucoma (eye pain, pressure, or blurry vision due to fluid buildup in the eye)
  • Trouble thinking, remembering, or solving problems; feeling less alert or very sleepy with low energy (these can be signs of too much ammonia in your blood, which can affect your brain)
  • Very bad skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis, which can cause peeling skin, blisters, and sores on your skin, mouth, throat, eyes, and genitals, potentially life-threatening.
  • Eye inflammation (uveitis) with symptoms like red eyes, pain, sensitivity to light, watery eyes, or seeing small spots or blurry vision.
  • Feeling abnormally happy, passing out, blindness in one eye, temporary blindness, night blindness, blurred vision, swelling in/around eyes, numb/tingly/color-changing fingers/toes in cold, liver problems, unusual skin smell, arm/leg discomfort, kidney problems.
  • Maculopathy (a disease of the central part of your retina that affects sharp vision). See your doctor if your vision changes or gets worse.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Topimax if you are allergic to topiramate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Topimax if you are pregnant or if you are a woman who can become pregnant and are not using effective birth control.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself, talk to your doctor right away.
  • Topimax can cause serious skin rashes or blisters. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any.
  • Drink a lot of water every day to help prevent kidney stones. Do not drink alcohol while taking Topimax.
