How to Use

Dosage

Treatment usually starts with a small dose of 30 mg per day. Your doctor will gradually increase your dose to find what works best for you.

Method

Take your tablet(s) every day at the same time, preferably once a day in the evening before bed. You can swallow the tablet whole with water or another liquid. If your doctor advises, you can also take smaller doses throughout the day (one in the morning and one in the evening).

Important

Your doctor will determine the most effective daily dose for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling very tired or sleepy
  • Gaining weight
RARE
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy, faint, or lightheaded, especially when standing up quickly
  • Feeling weak or lacking strength
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide (if this happens, contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately)
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Hypomania (a milder form of mania, where you feel very energetic or happy)
  • Swelling in ankles or feet due to fluid buildup (edema)
  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice), which may mean liver problems
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Slow heartbeat after starting treatment
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (severe muscle stiffness, involuntary movements, and high fever)
  • Joint pain
  • Restless legs
  • Skin rash
  • Heart rhythm disorders (fast, irregular heartbeat) and/or fainting. These can be life-threatening.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Tolvon if you have mania (feeling overly excited), liver disease, are allergic to mianserin or any other ingredient, or have taken MAO inhibitors within the last two weeks.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact your doctor or go to a hospital right away.
  • Tolvon can rarely reduce white blood cells, increasing infection risk. If you get a fever, sore throat, mouth sores, or other signs of infection, contact your doctor immediately for blood tests.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Tolvon, as it can make alcohol's effects stronger.
  • Do not stop taking Tolvon suddenly, even if you feel better. Always talk to your doctor about how to gradually reduce the dose.
