How to Use

Dosage

Treatment usually starts with a small dose, typically 30 mg per day. Your doctor may gradually increase the dose to the most effective daily amount.

Method

Take the tablet(s) whole with water or other liquid, preferably once daily in the evening before bedtime. Your doctor may also recommend taking it in smaller doses throughout the day (one dose in the morning and one in the evening).

Important

The maximum daily dose will be determined by your doctor to be the most effective for you.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Weight gain
  • Low blood pressure (causing dizziness or fainting, especially when standing up quickly)
  • Weakness
RARE
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Epileptic seizures
  • Hypomania (a mild mood disorder similar to mania)
  • Swelling of ankles or feet due to fluid retention (edema)
  • Yellowing of eyes or skin, indicating liver problems (jaundice)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Slow heartbeat after starting the medicine
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (symptoms include body stiffness, involuntary movements, and fever)
  • Joint pain
  • Restless legs
  • Skin rash
  • Heart rhythm disorders (fast irregular heartbeat) and/or fainting (can be life-threatening)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Tolvon if you have mania (feeling extremely happy or overactive).
  • Do not use Tolvon if you have liver disease or jaundice (yellow skin/eyes).
  • Do not use Tolvon if you are allergic to mianserin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use Tolvon if you are taking or have recently taken (in the last two weeks) other medicines called MAO inhibitors (e.g., moclobemide, tranylcypromine, selegiline, linezolid).
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact your doctor or go to a hospital immediately.

  • Tolvon can make you sleepy, so do not drive or use tools or machines if you feel drowsy.
  • Do not drink alcohol during Tolvon treatment, as it can make the effects of alcohol stronger.
  • Tolvon is not usually recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years old due to an increased risk of side effects like suicidal thoughts or aggressive behavior.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, diabetes, kidney disease, heart problems (including irregular heartbeat or recent heart attack), or glaucoma (high eye pressure).
  • Tolvon can rarely lower your white blood cell count, making you more prone to infections. If you get a fever, sore throat, mouth sores, or other signs of infection, contact your doctor immediately.
