How to Use

Dosage

Usually one 4 mg slow-release capsule once a day. If you have kidney or liver issues, or bothersome side effects, your doctor might lower your dose to one 2 mg slow-release capsule once a day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not chew it.

Important

No more than one 4 mg slow-release capsule per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dry mouth
  • Sinus infection (inflamed sinuses)
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, headache
  • Dry eyes, blurred vision
  • Indigestion, constipation, stomach pain, gas
  • Pain or difficulty urinating
  • Tiredness
  • Swelling due to fluid in the body (like in your ankles)
  • Diarrhea
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (these can be severe)
  • Nervousness
  • Tingling in fingers and toes
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Heart palpitations (feeling your heart beat fast or unevenly), heart failure (when your heart can't pump enough blood), irregular heartbeat
  • Inability to empty the bladder
  • Chest pain
  • Memory problems
  • Confusion, seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), faster heartbeat, red skin, heartburn, throwing up (vomiting), angioedema (severe swelling of your face, tongue, or throat; trouble swallowing; hives; trouble breathing), dry skin, feeling lost or confused about where you are or the time (disorientation), worsening of memory problems if you have dementia.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to tolterodine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you cannot urinate (urinary retention).
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma (a serious eye condition where eye pressure is too high, and it is not treated).
  • Do not use if you have myasthenia gravis (a condition causing severe muscle weakness).
  • Do not use if you have severe ulcerative colitis (a serious colon inflammation with sores).

  • Do not use if you have toxic megacolon (a severe and dangerous widening of the large intestine).
  • Do not use if you are pregnant.
  • Do not breastfeed while using this medicine.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, or affect your eyesight, which can impact your ability to drive or operate machines. Be careful.
  • Avoid using with certain antibiotics (like erythromycin, clarithromycin), antifungal medicines (like ketoconazole, itraconazole), or HIV medicines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include tachycardia, confusion and cognitive impairment. Increases risk of falls. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 25.11.2024)
