Tolterodin ratiopharm extended-release capsules are used to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder, such as not being able to hold your urine, needing to rush to the bathroom, and frequent urination.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is one 4 mg capsule once a day. If you have kidney or liver disease, your doctor might lower the dose to one 2 mg capsule once a day.

Method

Take the capsules by mouth. Swallow them whole with water. Do not chew the capsules.

Important

Do not take more than one 4 mg capsule per day, or one 2 mg capsule per day if your doctor has adjusted your dose due to kidney or liver problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to tolterodine or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you cannot urinate (urinary retention).
  • Do not take if you have a certain type of glaucoma that is not controlled by treatment.
  • Do not take if you have severe muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis).
  • Do not take if you have severe bowel problems like ulcerative colitis or a very widened large bowel (toxic megacolon).

  • Talk to your doctor if you have trouble urinating or a weak urine stream.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have digestive problems that slow down food movement or digestion.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a nerve disorder that affects blood pressure, bowel function, or sexual function.
  • Mention to your doctor if you have a hiatal hernia (where part of your stomach pushes through your diaphragm).
  • Let your doctor know if you have a history of slow bowel movements or severe constipation.
  • Consult your doctor if you have any heart problems, such as an abnormal heart rhythm, slow heartbeat, a weak heart muscle, a past heart attack, or heart failure. Also, tell them if you have low levels of potassium, calcium, or magnesium in your blood.
  • This medicine can make you dizzy, tired, or affect your vision. Do not drive or operate machines if you experience these effects.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant.
  • It is not recommended to breastfeed while taking Tolterodin ratiopharm.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include tachycardia, confusion and cognitive impairment. Increases risk of falls. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 25.11.2024)
