How to Use

Dosage

Usually 10 mg or 30 mg once a day.

Method

Take the capsule with your main meal, ideally at the same time each day. Swallow it whole; do not chew.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 30 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • High fat levels in your blood (triglycerides and cholesterol)
RARE
  • Changes in blood cells, such as more platelets or fewer red and white blood cells.
  • Lower thyroid hormone levels.
  • Eye inflammation, eyelid inflammation, dry and irritated eyes; vision problems like blurry or distorted vision, cataracts.
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Dizziness.
  • Red face, high blood pressure, inflamed blood vessels, swelling in hands, feet, or ankles.
  • Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, indigestion; severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea.
  • Muscle and joint pain, tiredness. Levels of muscle breakdown products might increase in your blood.
  • Dry skin (especially on face), dry and inflamed lips, red skin, itchy rash, inflammation, hair loss; flaky skin; nail problems, increased sensitivity to sunlight, changes in hair structure; hives.
  • Elevated liver enzymes in blood tests.
  • Extra bone growth, including a spine disease (ankylosing spondylitis).
  • Depression or similar disorders (low mood, mood swings, anxiety, aggression), suicidal thoughts or attempts, suicide, abnormal behavior, psychosis (loss of touch with reality, hallucinations).
  • Severe allergic reactions: raised, itchy rash (hives), swelling of the face or mouth (angioedema), breathing difficulties, collapse.

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can seriously harm an unborn baby. Women must use reliable birth control. Do not use if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or become pregnant during treatment or within one month after stopping treatment.
  • Do not use while breastfeeding, as the medicine can pass into breast milk and harm the baby.
  • Do not take if you have liver or severe kidney disease, high blood fat levels (cholesterol or triglycerides), uncontrolled thyroid disease, very high vitamin A levels in your body, or if you are allergic to alitretinoin, other retinoids, peanuts, or soy.
  • Do not take other retinoids (e.g., isotretinoin), vitamin A supplements, or tetracyclines (an antibiotic) with Toctino, as this increases the risk of side effects.
  • If you experience depression, aggression, mood swings, thoughts of self-harm, or suicidal thoughts, stop the medicine immediately and contact your doctor.

  • If you have vision problems or your night vision gets worse, tell your doctor right away. Do not drive or use machines if you see poorly in the dark.
  • If you get a persistent headache, nausea, vomiting, or blurred vision, stop the medicine immediately and contact your doctor. These can be signs of a serious condition.
  • If you have bloody diarrhea, stop the medicine immediately and contact your doctor.
  • Avoid too much sun and sunbeds. Always use sunscreen (at least SPF 15) when outdoors.
  • Do not give this medicine to anyone else. Return any unused capsules to the pharmacy. Do not donate blood during treatment or for one month afterwards.
