Toctino capsules are used to treat severe, long-lasting hand eczema in adults that has not improved with other local treatments, including steroids.

How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose is 10 mg or 30 mg once daily. Your doctor might prescribe a lower dose of 10 mg if you cannot tolerate the 30 mg dose.

Method

Take the capsule whole with your main meal, preferably at the same time each day. Do not chew it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 30 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • High blood fat levels (triglycerides and cholesterol)
RARE
  • Changes in blood cells (increased platelets, decreased red and white blood cells)
  • Low thyroid hormone levels
  • Eye problems: Eye inflammation, eyelid inflammation, dry and irritated eyes, blurred or distorted vision, cloudy eye surface (cataracts), worsening night vision
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Dizziness
  • Blood and circulation problems: Flushing, high blood pressure, inflammation of blood vessels, swelling of hands, lower legs, or feet
  • Stomach and bowel problems: Nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, indigestion, severe stomach pain with or without bloody diarrhea
  • Muscle and joint pain: Muscle pain, joint pain, tiredness
  • Skin and hair problems: Dry skin (especially on the face), dry and inflamed lips, skin redness, itchy rash, skin inflammation, flaky skin, hair loss, nail disorders, increased skin sensitivity to sunlight, changes in hair structure
  • Liver problems: Increased liver enzyme levels (shown in blood tests)
  • Bone problems: Bone overgrowth, including a spinal disease called ankylosing spondylitis
  • Long-lasting severe headache with nausea, vomiting, and vision changes (may be signs of high pressure inside the head)
  • Mental health problems: Depression or similar disorders (sadness, mood changes, anxiety, emotional difficulties), worsening depression, violence, aggression, suicidal thoughts or attempts, abnormal behavior, signs of psychosis (losing touch with reality, like hearing or seeing things that aren't there)
  • Severe allergic reactions: Hives, swelling of face or mouth causing breathing problems, collapse

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can seriously harm an unborn baby. Do not use if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Women who can get pregnant must use effective birth control during and for one month after treatment.
  • Do not take Toctino if you have liver disease, severe kidney disease, uncontrolled thyroid disease, high levels of fats (cholesterol or triglycerides) in your blood, or very high levels of vitamin A in your body.
  • Do not take Toctino if you are allergic to alitretinoin, other retinoids (like isotretinoin), peanuts, soy, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking tetracycline antibiotics.
  • If you experience mental health problems like depression, aggression, mood changes, or thoughts of harming yourself, stop taking Toctino immediately and contact your doctor.

  • If you have vision problems, tell your doctor right away, as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • If you get a severe headache, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision, stop taking the capsules immediately and contact your doctor, as these could be signs of serious pressure inside your head.
  • If you experience bloody diarrhea, stop taking the capsules immediately and contact your doctor.
  • Minimize sun exposure and avoid sunbeds, as your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight. Use high SPF sunscreen (at least 15) when going outdoors.
  • Do not donate blood during treatment or for one month after stopping Toctino, as it could harm an unborn baby if a pregnant woman receives your blood.
