How to Use

Dosage

Usually 2-4 mg, three times a day, for painful muscle spasms.

Method

For severe cases, an extra 2-4 mg can be taken in the evening to reduce daytime sleepiness. For muscle stiffness due to nerve problems, the doctor will set your dose individually, starting with small doses and slowly increasing.

Important

The most you can take in one day is 36 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sleepy, tired, dizzy, stomach problems, dry mouth, weak muscles.
  • Trouble sleeping, low blood pressure, feeling sick (nausea), higher levels of liver enzymes (shown in blood tests).
RARE
  • Slower heart rate.
  • Fainting, blurry vision, rash, red or inflamed skin, feeling very weak, symptoms if you stop the medicine suddenly (like high blood pressure and fast heart rate), stomach pain, throwing up, itching, slurred speech.
  • Liver inflammation or failure (signs include dark urine, yellow eyes or skin), seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations), confusion, severe allergic reactions (trouble breathing, dizziness, swelling of face/throat, hives).

Important Warnings

  • Don't take this medicine if you're allergic to tizanidine or any other ingredient in it.
  • Don't take if you have severe liver problems (if your liver tests are very high).
  • Don't take if you are using fluvoxamine (a medicine for depression) or ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or liver problems; your liver may need checking regularly.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are older or have low blood pressure, as this medicine can make you dizzy or faint.

  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can make you more sleepy.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Don't drive or use machines if this medicine makes you sleepy, dizzy, or lowers your blood pressure.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. In severe renal impairment, administer only once a day. Significant adverse effects include sedation, hypotension and torsades de pointes ventricular tachycardia. Consider potential interactions. (updated 16.9.2024)
