How to Use

Dosage

For painful muscle spasms, take 2-4 mg three times a day. In severe cases, an extra 2-4 mg dose can be taken late at night. For muscle spasms caused by nerve issues, start with 2 mg three times a day, then your doctor might slowly increase it to 12-24 mg per day, split into 3 or 4 doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 36 mg in one day.

  • Difficulty sleeping or falling asleep
  • Dry mouth, stomach problems
  • Muscle weakness
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness
  • Slow or fast heart rate
  • Low or decreased blood pressure
  • Nausea
RARE
  • Higher liver enzyme levels in the blood
  • Infections (like stuffy or runny nose, sore throat, or urinary tract infections)
  • Allergic skin rash (hives)
  • Severe allergic reactions (with very low blood pressure, swelling in the throat, trouble breathing, fainting)
  • Confusion, nervousness, seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Headache
  • Trouble controlling movements, muscle twitching, trouble speaking
  • Fainting, feeling like you are spinning (vertigo)
  • Trouble focusing your eyes, blurry vision
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, constipation
  • Liver problems (inflammation or failure)
  • Itching, skin rash, skin infection
  • Urinating small amounts often
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling weak, withdrawal symptoms, flu-like illness

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Tizagelan if you are allergic to tizanidine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take with fluvoxamine (for depression) or ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic).
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney problems, as you might need a lower dose.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems like coronary artery disease.

  • If you have liver problems, your doctor may check your liver regularly. Stop taking Tizagelan and contact your doctor immediately if your skin or eyes turn yellow, or if you feel sick, lose appetite, or feel very tired without a reason.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Tizagelan, as it can make you feel more tired.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Do not stop taking Tizagelan suddenly, especially if you have been on high doses, without talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly can cause your heart rate to go up and blood pressure to rise.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. In severe renal impairment, administer only once a day. Significant adverse effects include sedation, hypotension and torsades de pointes ventricular tachycardia. Consider potential interactions. (updated 16.9.2024)
